Bad fuel pump or something electrical?

Slowly but surely I'm cleaning up the "Blue Beauty" I'm definitely partial to the 64-66 trucks but this 69 is a great driver and it gets quite a bit of attention for being an old beat up 250 especially with the new wheels and tires.

Anyways I noticed as I was driving a slight "pause" that you can feel and hear from the motor that lasts only a split second and happens out of rhythm. It seems to happen when the motor is warm and it's hot out side. The sound and pause you can feel varies from almost unnoticeable to pretty strong and seems to happen on initial pressing of the throttle and while cruising. I've never noticed it while its in high RPM.

Could this be a symptom of a fuel pump going bad or does this sound like an electrical issue?

Thanks guys!

Yep right when I got it I changed oil, filter, air filter, plugs, wires, fuel filter, carb and new pertronix dist. and coil (which didn't work out so I replaced the points in the original and put that back in) Also a new ignition switch because the old one was bad.

Replaced condenser and coil (wanted to replace those anyway) and the split second pauses were still present while in park and keeping the motor at a consistent high RPM it is not present or noticeable while idling.

I will replace fuel pump tomorrow and see how that goes. Anything else I should check? Rubber fuel lines are new and so is filter.

I'm unclear as to when this happens. First you say it doesn't happen at RPM, now you say it does. Tell us, at what point exactly does this happen and how are you driving when it happens?

I meant it doesn't happen while RPMs are climbing(trans downshifts and engine revs up). It only happens on initial throttle and then when you are cruising at a consistent RPM. I've never noticed while idling.

Okay. Only when at a consistent RPM? If you accelerate just ever so slightly from this consistent RPM does it go away? If you let off just a tiny bit does it go away?

Sounds like electrical to me. If it was fuel related it would be gradual.

what did you mean by the pertronix ignition coil and points not working out so well?

With the pertronix billet distributor and flame thrower coil the truck died on me after turning it off at a gas station and didn't start again until I put the original distributor and coil back in.

I notice it mainly at cruising speed around 45 MPH and mid RPMs (I don't have a tach.) If I press the throttle slightly it will continue with the hiccups but if I mash it down I don't notice it at all.

You mean it has a flat spot. What carb are you running?

Sounds to me to be a lean misfire that happens every once in a while. Not constant. Are you the FTE member that has the way too lean jets in the carb trying to get better gas mileage?
