I have a 1989 f150 custom i6 300ci which I purchased about 6 mnths ago. The previous owner spray painted the top and bottom half of the truck with a Matte Black(**** quality) paint to cover up the worn out hood/roof of the truck which is typical for this generation. Well I think it looks horrible and want to remove it. Certain places have been chipping already so I think it shouldn't be too difficult.
(I have a 3000PSI pressure washer at work with hot water which has helped take small chunks off)
Could questions:
-Any products to use that will help remove it?
-Will the paint underneath be completely destroyed?
-Could I use clay bar to remove it?
-I have some rust on the rocker edge should I avoid removing that paint?
That's all I can think of if anyone could give some pointers that would be great!
Clay bar won't work. Only chemical mild enough to not damage underlying paint would be lacquer thinner and I doubt that will work. If it's rattle can primer, "maybe". The clear coat was more than likely deteriorated resulting in the cover up.
You need to find someone in your area that soda blasts. Soda blasting will remove it without damaging the metal. However, after soda blasting, you will need to paint it ASAP to prevent rust.
