I cleaned the MAF in my '99 3.0 Ranger twice in the past two months. The first time with just carb cleaner, the second time with carb cleaner and a Q-tip. I also used Valvoline's SynPower fuel and intake cleaners.
The ping is barely noticeable when the air is off. When I have the air on (needed for the Las Vegas summer) and I'm going between 45-65 the ping is loud and clear.
How many miles do you have on it? Have you replaced the fuel filter? Have you Cleaned the Throttle Body? Have you replaced the air filter? Have you pulled your codes? Have you had it put on a emissions machine to see if the O2 sensors are clogged? How 'bout replaced plugs and wires?
I run a quart of Ethyl Alcohol (from CVS) through mine every other fill up and it hasnt pinged (except when I pulled my boat with the AC on) since. Also, when you cleaned the MAF, did you reset your computer? It needs to relearn the engine characteristics after the MAF is cleaned.
