I've noticed how fuel quality will affect mileage. I had a 1997 F150 with a 4.6 that I took south a couple years back to pick up a car in Texas. Typically got around 600 KM on a tank up here in Canada. Mileage got progressively worse as I worked south. Got as bad as 250 km on a tank after I loaded the car onto the trailer in Austin. I recall it was really hot as well. Gas mileage was horrible for the trip back, but immediately got better after I crossed the border. Temps remained hot.
I'm not sure what caused this. I was inclined to blame methanol, but there has been a gas chain up here that has been putting methanol in the fuel years before it became fashionable. (Husky Oil Canada). Lots of people blamed a variety of ills on the methanol, but I would run it occasionally and I never noticed any mileage penalty. In fact, I felt it was beneficial because the methanol would sop up any water that may have condensed in the tank. Better than gas line antifreeze! There was a significant difference if prices for gas between Canada and the US. Official explanation was taxes and a good part of the northern route was served by gas tankers out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, so I'm pretty sure the product was consistent.
Diesel fuel is another matter. There is considerable difference between winter and summer diesel, presumably wax content, but the mileage difference on my 7.3 IDI is significant. Probably about a 25% penalty for the winter fuel.
I guess we could all move to Alaska. I think all their gas is real..
Actually, there is only ONE station in Anchorage that offers REAL gas, the rest all have a blend of ethanol but not sure of the % as it is not disclosed as far as i can find anyhow. You have to remember most of our fuel is refined out of state and shipped up.
I do notice a slight uptick in MPG when i fill up at the station with real gas, best part is its .4 miles from my work and they still do it old school and let you fill up before paying!
Amazing how you put 10% ethanol in the gas and you end up with 10% less fuel mileage. (or more) Great policy!
It's very hard to find around here, but I buy it every time I see it while travelling. Gets better mileage every time!
I noticed that as well when our local gas station went to 10% corn, gas mileage dropped..... I did find one station nearby so I will check it out tomorrow.
