I have a 79 F 100 put some skinny mud tires on the back, now it walks and I can only go about 50mph. The back are 2and 1/4 in narrower than front from outside of tread to outside of tread. Any suggestions do I need to add spacers or get offset rims
Narrower tires are a bit more reactive than a wider tread. Are they on narrower rims? Are they the same tire as the front? Did you swap the fronts and backs and see what difference it made?
I dont think spacers are a favored solution
The rims are the right size checked before I bought the tires. Haven't tried changing from back to front. I was just wondering if the back tires tracking narrower than the front would make it drive terribly and how to fix the problem. It's a single cab long bed 300i6 with a standard tranny just for more info. Thanks

Uhh, you really should be running the same size tires all the way around. That's got to look idiotic as well.
Actually doesn't look that bad runs great in mud & ice. And that measurement is from one side of the truck to the other so its only a inch and a eighth tread difference on each tire. Hate the big tires all the way around I know its popular but not really logical for my set up.

What exactly is the size of the front.and rear tires? Its a f100 2wd correct so reguardless of tire size weither its 31x10.50x15 front and rear or 31x10.50x15 front and 44x16.50x15 in the rear the truck will drive the same besides that its sluggish and lose top end speed from the big tires. Tell me the exact size of the tires.
Well, having the rear end walk on you isnt logical for your setup either.
When i lived up north in Montana, we used to put snow tires on the rear all the time, not necessarily matching the front, and never had this problem.
I would be curious what swapping front to back would do.
Also, i shook like crazy around 60 mph, thought it was just the age of the truck. I got different rims and had my tires put on, but had em balanced and now i can cruise 75 np.
Where do you get these strange tire sizes? I bought a complete set for our 75 F-150
Firestone for $260. They came with rims from a Ford van. My son at Firestone reversed the tires on the rims and balanced them. Now I have a perfect set of white stripe tires as on the red pick-up on the cover of the Ford brochure. Oh yea…the size is 235R75X15.
I drive on paved roads. Winter months in storage. Who needs snow tires.
