My mom's 88 ranger 2.3 2WD has a check engine light that doesn't come on ever, causing it to fail CA emissions. What I mean is that it doesn't light during startup in the "test" function. I pulled the diagram and it was getting power in the on/run and start positions, there was an open on the ground side of the bulb. The diagram show ground through the IMS (inferred milage sensor?) and exteded useful life sensor? I'm thinking this is the prob. But can someone tell me what and where these are and what there function might be on her truck?? This is a base model extended cab also.
I'm not real familar with 88s CEL but if you have a IMS then is just a dummy light that comes on around a certain number of miles I think. Hopefully someone else will have more insight on this.
Sounds like one or more of those sensors needs to ground themselves out in order to complete the circuit. Though I've never heard of those sensors you mentioned, they do sound kind of superfluous. Why dont you just ground out the neg side of the bulb prior to the sensors and see what happens. If it goes on with key and off while running should be enough to pass inspection.
