I'm asking a question for a friend, about is speed odmeter not working in his 2002 ford ranger... Is it controlled with a cable or a sensor.. Also what would be the first place to look to trouble shoot it as well... Thanks..
I believe the sensor is mounted on the top of the rear differential. Unplug the harness and check the condition of the pins. I'm not sure if the sensor can go bad - I've not had to deal with this issue yet.
Does he have a CEL, or ABS light lit, if so, have the computer, or ABS controller scanned for trouble codes & post All code Numbers, as they can offer up good trouble shooting clues.
If he is having problems with the auto tranny shifting, cruise control dropping out, or not setting, or has the ABS light lit, along with the speed-o not working, put the rear ABS speed sensor, its wiring, or electrical connector pins/sockets on the suspect list, as its a common problem part in the speed-o not working & all those other systems use its PID output to do their things, so if its output is corrupt they might also act out.
My 99 Rangers rear ABS speed sensor went out in Dec, turned the ABS light on, but it didn't affect any of those other things for some reason, but my ELM scantool noted that the sensor was open circuit, or shorted to ground. When I checked, it was measuring open circuit, the new one measured 1.9K ohms. Replacing the rear differential mounted speed sensor put my ABS woes right.
More thoughts for consideration, let us know how it goes.
Is it the speedometer or the odometer that's not working? If it is just the odometer that is not working then it is the plastic gear on the odometer motor has failed pretty common. A $10.00 part and an hours work. Speedometer and odometer not working usually points to a VSS sensor on rear axle. Should be other symptoms erratic shifting.ABS lit up, cruise not working cel codes.
When the sensor on top of my pumpkin went bad, the check engine light came on plus my speedometer was dead. I can't remember if my odometer stopped working.
Pretty much a 5 minute job but you should use a star socket to remove the sensor.
When my ABS/speed sensor went south, I replaced it with an aftermarket model with one problem, I broke it by OVERTIGHTENING the little bolt that holds it on the diff. Had to replace that ONE, so DO NOT stand on the wrench you are using to replace that bad sensor!! The NEW aftermarket model works great with no problems-just don't get carried away with the torque!!
