New System
I'm putting together a new system in my 1990 F-250 Ex-Cab and need to add a sub-woofer and tweeters.
So far my system includes:
Deck: Pioneer DEH-1500 CD receiver
Speakers: Infinity Kappa 60.6cs in front doors
Amp: Kenwood KAC-629s 60 X 2
Now I want to add a sub-woofer and a set of Infinity Kappa tweeters in the rear. I can build a box for under the rear seat, but I'd have very limited mounting depth (about 5 inches). If I raise the rear set to accommodate a larger box my son and daughter will have no where to sit.
Does anyone have suggestions other then by a new Truck?

Ditch the tweeters in the back. It will sound funny and unnatural. Give the overall dimensions you have to work with and we can advise you on which direction to go. An 8 incher or 2 should be possible.

Since I wrote this post I did a little measureing and have discovered I can build a sealed box for one Image Dynamics ID8 speaker that will fit well as according to their web-site it only requires a .3 sealed inclosure. However the ones pictured on their web site look different and appear to need less depth then the ones I've found on the Net. This may really show my lack of knowledge regarding car audio, would the IDs be good with my Infinity Kappa 60.5cs infront. Is there another woofer besides the ID that you would suggest.
The reason I've been thinking about adding tweeters in the rear of the truck is my two teenagers complain they do not hear music well in the back and so I though I'd try to fix that for them. I can forget those if it will not work well though?
Also should I stick with the Kenwood KAC-629 60x2 amp or should I use a mono of some type I've been planning on the Kenwood because Cruchfield has it on sale for $90 and I understand they are decent quality.

Check out the Elemental Designs E8A. They only need .3 cuft sealed enclosure. Heck, if you ported it, it would only need .5 cuft. It does have a mounting depth of just over 5", though. The JL 8W3v2 is also a great choice, and a tad cheaper. I have no experience with the ID you're looking at, but Image Dynamics doesn't make anything bad, so you can't go wrong. Reasonant Engineering has the best deal on a 8 incher, but their website is being reconstructed right now. If you were to wait, I would grab on of the RE 8's (or a pair
). They're dirt cheap and provide mucho bass.
So your kids can "hear" the music, just buy a cheap, but decent, pair of coaxials. Infinity Reference's can be had for $50-$60 online. They provide pretty good sound, especially considering their price. Just power them with the HU.

Once again thanks! Is there any online stores in the US that sell the Reasonant Engineering speakers. The only online store I found that had them is in Canada and they wont ship to the US. Also do you happen to know RE's telephone number I'd be willing to call them. Frankly if there in the same class as the other referrals I buy them as they were only $99 Ca on the Canadian site I foundwhich is about $76 US? One more thing how much power to drive them properly.

Also for some reason since I've gotten home from work even though I'm using the same search engine I can't even get to RE web-site at all. Do you know there web-address.

Either email them at sales@respl.com, or call them at (702) 896-4823. I'm from the U.S., so I don't know anything about Canada shipping options or Canadian based online audio stores. RE will sell direct, too. Just contact them. Good people over there.
Here's a review of the RE 8 by Loyd Lowry, one of the best known, and most successful SPL cometitors in the country. This guy knows subs like very few others. He went gaga over it...here ya' go RE 8 review When you get there, click the "SPL Review" button. This is where you'll find the mini-review. As you can see, it kicked major butt in a small, .45 cuft ported box with just 150 watts (at a 2 ohm load). I've read a few other glowing reviews of this woofer (one by a SQ champ from Tennessee). If I was in the market for a 8" sub, this, with it's unbelievably low price, would be on my short list.
Hope this helps...

Well I've now got two RE8's to add to my system. In speaking to Resonant Engineering I'm told I have two box options a .3 sealed in closure or a .7 ported and that includes the extra for the speaker displacement. My truck is a 1990 Ford F-250 Ext. Cab. The space I have to work with is 7 " H X 10" D X 58 L under the real seat. I can only raise it about 1". The space behind the seat is way too small because the seat back sits right against the cab.
RE was so adamant about them working best in a ported enclosure that I feel I must go that route if possible. They said they will work best in a .7 with a made of 2" PVC X 12"L. I've done some figuring and a 7" X 10" X 27.5" (external detentions) rectangular enclosure is .70. Will a rectangular enclosure of those dimensions work.
Second question what amp should I buy? RE suggested I look at Planet Audio Amps does anyone else have any suggestions for Amps of that same quality I might consider.

The shape of the enclosure doesn't matter, so long as the internal volume remains the same. Whichever dimensions give you .7 cuft and make installation in your truck easiest, stick with. Just make sure theres at least an inch of clearance in front of the sub and port.
Amp...how much are you looking to spend? There are a million amps that would work.

Well I don’t have a lot of money. So I don't want to spend more then $180 closer to $100 hundred if I can find the right deal. I have several sources to buy at only 5% above wholesale. I just don't know which brands to consider. I'm familiar with the all the ones you see in Best Buy, Good Guys, etc. however I just don't know which ones are quality and which are junk. There's other brands I've seen on the net, that I'm not familiar with and am not sure if they are flee market junk or just gear you don't find in the National chains, but would see in small high-end shops. I used to be familiar with this stuff 10 years ago.
Regarding the ported enclosure. Is the position of the woofer or port important

The JBL 300.1 would be great. At Ikesound it's about $150. It would provide 300 watts at 1 ohm to the pair of RE 8's. If you wanted to get power at 4 ohms, I would recommend a US Acoustics 2100 which would provide 300 watts, bridged. It will cost around $125 at The Zeb, Crutchfield, or Sounddomain.
The RE 8 is dual 4 ohm, correct?

BTW, neither of these amps have a subsonic filter. If all you listen to is music at a reasonable to loud volume, it probably isn't really necessary (most music doesn't go THAT low, so it will not be needed unless you were to get totally irresponsible with the volume ****).
