You could, but take the trans and ECM. Better to just take what you need from the Mountaineer then have to find stuff.

Or you could send me the engine<img title="Evil Grin" class="inlineimg" id="vB_Editor_001_smilie_30" alt="" src="http://images.ford-trucks.com/forums/images/smilies2/evilgrin0007.gif" border="0">

Don't be surprised if this turns out to be a big project. There are a lot of things to consider. In addition to the trans, ECM and engine, you'll need the wire bundles. Ford doesn't do wire bundles in a logical manner with disconnects in convenient locations. Who knows how much you'll have to take from the donor. It would be wise to have the wiring and vacuum diagrams for both vehicles. As far as I know, the 5.0 never had a part-time, two speed transfer case. And there might be differences in the driveshaft length. I would imagine the torsion bars on the 5.0 have a different spring rate, too, due to the heavier motor. Plus you get into things like motor mounts, tranny mounts, shift linkage, accessory locations/hookups, radiator, hoses, fuel lines, etc., etc. The list goes on and on. Don't expect to do this in a weekend. If you have time, go for it. If not, my suggestion would be to find a 5.0 donor vehicle with a bad motor or tranny.

It was hinted at above, but not quite stated outright. Your Explorer with the V6 should have the 5-speed auto. That transmission was not used with the 5.0L V8. Instead, the V8 has a 4-speed auto. You won't be able to just mate your Explorer's trans up to the Mountaineer's V8.
