Your friend does not know what he's talking about. You don't need a tuner or reprogram to do that. But your truck will sound like total sh!! without a muffler on it. Are you doing this just because you want it loud so everybody will look at you?

I think a 6.0 sounds great with a turbo back straight pipe on it. To each their own. as stated above, no tuner needed until you get to the 6.4's.

I have 4" straight pipe and love it. Cant really even hear it with the windows up. But I do roll them down quite often.

People outside can hear it and it sounds all poppy. Might as well retrofit some dodge tow mirrors on there and flip them up and out and get a smoke tune so everyone will notice.

No I'm not one for attention but I was told the factory exhaust is very restrictive and I could get better throttle response and fast turbo spools off with a stright pipe and it's like a mustang, they don't have enough sound from the factory

straight piped 6.0 sounds awesome, perfect quiet in the cab and then sounds awesome when you get on it.

You must be confusing a turbo diesel with a gas engine...

Your obviously driving the wrong truck if you think the 6.0 straight piped sounds like crap and "poppy". Best sounding diesel out there, and lots will agree (Not just because this is a ford forum)

Definitely not confusing the two, I drive the same truck you all do. First thing I did when I bought it is added a nice sounding muffler to it because the PO had a 4" full exhaust with no muffler. To my ears it just made a lot of noise but didn't really sound good. It's not like I don't like a nice deep tone, but totally removing the muffler is just juvenile for my tastes.

Anyway to the OP, it's your call. If you plan on some mods and a tune later on, then the 4" is probably the best way to go. If you will remain stock then I'd keep the factory exhaust and muffler (or swap it out for something that gives you a better sound). The factory muffler is not restrictive. A cat delete, well most of us do...
