Just picked up my 5th Wheel trailer that weighs in at about 7000 lbs. When starting out from a dead stop and having to give it a fair amount of pedal, I notice a slight shudder until build up a little speed. It doesn't do it if I start out gentle or without the trailer. Is this normal or a sign of impending E40D problems?
The truck is a '93 F-250 Supercab with 460.
Thanks,
One of the guys posted earlier that this may just be a sign of a heavy load or the tongue weight being too high or improperly adjusted hitch or rig. It was posted last week I think and is probably under towing or trannies.
Torque Shudder is usually more of a problem when accelerating moderately from about 40 or 50mph or so. It is the TC clutch slipping and the TC clutch is not normally locked up from a dead stop. It also won't show up under hard acceleration since most TC clutches unlock under heavy load. They lock up during cruise or gentle acceleration. If you get a shudder then, it may be torque shudder.
Just another tid bit. Crawl under and chech the bushing in between the trans and the crossmember. You may have busted a bolt or split the split bushing and a pc. is gone. You may want to replace it with a poly pc. or stock, depending on how often you tow. Good luck....
Well, Fish Lake was great and tho I still feel a shudder when I start out and a low growl goingup the steeper hils, nothing blew up. I decided I didn't really need to break any 0-60 records so unless absolutely necessary, I ease inot the low teens before applying mu pedal pressure.
I did change the fluid before leaving and it did make a big difference, just didn't get rid of all of the shudder.
I will check for that bushing abd see if that is in poor shape. Thanks for the help.
Check all u-joints and the center carrier bearing. That center carrier bearing may be the culprit. If you have questions about the center carrier bearing, let me know. I had a thread on here earlier about it and had mine replaced. It got rid of a lot of shudder.
Another thing to look into is the motor mounts. They may be attributing to the shudder.
