making the 6.0 happy

Hi all, i'm new to the 6.0 and I am leaning that is no where near the same as my 7.3.

I am getting all the parts together ( egr delete, oil cooler, etc)

has anyone heard of or is running platinum performance oil cooler? it is $150 with gaskets.

I am also planning on a coolant filter and cleaning up the turbo while i'm in their... it has 184k on it, and my delta is 10 degrees

I plan on doing a flush with simple green before changing everything out

is their anything I am over looking? or you all might advise of doing?

once I get the coolant leaks fixed on the front of the engine I will dive into this

OEM oil cooler only...

3C3Z-6A642-CA

As for coolant flush, simple green is used if oil has contaminated the coolant. Some have used CLR as a chemical flush.

If your ECT and EOT temps are fine as is, I would only do a distilled flush and not bother with the cooler IMHO

Thanks. Is a 10 degree delta nothing to worry about?

By diluted flush do you mean just distilled water?

10 degrees @ 65 mph unloaded starting with ECT of at least 190?

That isn't technically bad, 15 is the cut-off. You could drive the next 100k and not see an increase. If it was 6 degree difference 2 months ago and it's now 10, I might consider it.

Also depends on how quickly the EOT cools down, from say 10 degree at highway speeds to 4-6 once cruising along at 40 or at a long stoplight.

I wouldn't worry about a 10 degree spred. Just do a fresh water flush and refill with a 50/50 mix of Ford Premium Gold and distilled water. If you have a Napa near by, Zerex G05 is the same coolant. If your ect's are on the low side then I'd replace the t-stat. Should be in the 190's to low 200's.

Are you towing with your new (to you) 6.0? 10* spread is plenty fine.... I wouldn't spend all that $ for 10*! You may find that even with a new thermostat you'll run 186-200 normally. When stressed by towing for example you'll run 190-220* Oil would be 5-12* higher. You'll notice the temps come down pretty quickly on the level.

I'll probably get a lot of flack for saying a couple things but I've been around the 7.3 and 6.0s long enough that I believe I have worthwhile input. I don't think a coolant filter is necessary personally. I know of way too many 300,000+ mile trucks on the same water pump, radiator etc so I dont buy in to the casting sand being an issue. Its always going to be there. Ive not been able to contribute a failure was directly related to the lack of a coolant filter.
I also understand the importance of monitoring and being conscious of temp spreads involving the coolers, but this forum has an obsession with them and calling them deltas, which is absurd.
Internet forums have their own cultures so just keep that in mind and take the smart people's advice but remember some of them are very obsessed and conservative. A 10 degree spread doesnt mean you should run out and replace the oil cooler. Unless you are in there anyway...

no towing as of yet and when we do it will be a 3500lb boat, it is my wife's daily driver and sees 28 miles a day at 45-50 mph.. their is a 10% grade each way the brakes and everything get a bit of a work out...

the coolant temp is running between 195 and 200 consistently, tonight we will have it out on the highway for a bit so I can see what the temps do then

I don't have to deal with emissions so I am going to delete the egr system because they just don't make since to me on a diesel engine

once I get my coolant figured out and fixed I will replace the t-stat. I will probably go with the 195 I found from bullet proof diesel

and I will go with rotella elc concentrate and mix it with distilled water

I do agree that the casting sand doesn't cause water pump failure, I have 242k on my 7.3 with stock water pump.

my thinking was the other junk in the 6.0 system might make it worth having.

the word delta did catch me off guard but that is the way some things go

I believe that 195 t-stat is for their oil cooler kit...not the engine coolant.

The orange EGR cooler hose is known to leak. The updated hose is blue.
