I posted in the expedition/navigator with zero replies so since there basically the same vehicles maybe I can get some help.
Alright working on my mothers 00 EB expedition with the 5.4.
I read the codes last weekend and it had P0171 and P0174 it also had a very bad idle to it, I cleaned the maf and switched it with one I knew worked, no change. I tracked down to a very badly leaking pcv elbow on back of the intake. Well today I replaced the elbow, it definitely calmed down some. I rechecked the codes and found several more. P0136 p0156 p1131 p1151 p0171 and p0174. I googled them all and they seem to be mostly o2 sensors and the bank 1/2 lean. Im hopping they won't come back. It also had a p0304 which I know is hole 4 misfire and could be the jump that were still feeling.
But in case the codes come back (just disconnected the battery to clear codes) what else can I look at that would cause all these codes? I'll have her drive it some to see what codes come back and put them up here when/if they all come back.
And update: the bank 1/2 and missfire 4 didn't come back (yet anyways) but the other 4 did, any ideas?
First thing is you have to interpret the codes correctly if they are to be of help in solving the issues. This is why they set.
Since you did some work and cleared the codes, post what comes back and go from there as a fresh start..
Good luck.
P0136 p0156 p1131 p1151 came back yesterday (after 40ish miles). She is stopping by tomorrow after work when it will have around 150 on it to see if any others came back.
Get your code list and look at each one. Use a FORD specific list.
136 tells you OX sensor bank 1, sensor 2 circuit is in trouble.
156 tells you the same for back 2, sensor 2.
.
1131 and 1151 tells you the front sensors both banks are not working and show a lean condition.
What would all these code descriptions suggest and have in common?
Might it be the harness between them to the computer?
Would you get under the truck and look for melted wires etc. at some location?
All these together should result in very poor fuel mileage and cold start problems and poor idle etc..
Let us know! Good luck.
Thanks I'll give it a look when I get a chance. Between my work schedule and hers it's hard to find a time to look at it. She is supposed to bring it by later to let me see if any other codes popped.
Okay put the code reader back on it, P0136 p0156 p1131 p1151 were still there. P0171 and p0174 lean codes came back. Also a P0304 came back along with a p0306 so misfire 4&6... I'm really lost here.
Address the two misfires first.
You need to have a clean running motor first. Check the boot conditions and see if there is anything in the plug wells, first.
Then look for the cause of the 136/156 codes as suggested above.
Last, the 171/174 codes. these could be caused by the above 136/156 code trouble.
There could be some interaction setting some codes but appears there is more than one issue present at the same time.
You need to sort one at a time or confusion reins because this motor's control system is a bit sick.
Good luck.
Thanks. I've heard horror stories of 5.4 plug issues but mostly the later model ones. Anything special required for a 2000 model? They looked to be similar to my 97 4.6 other than the cop is on the plug verse wires.
