Wouldn't a trailer just be a whole lot easier and more versatile?

I must be missing something because I don't see the advantage of putting sleds or quads up on top of the truck bed. A trailer is more useful and I'd be less concerned towing a trailer than hauling toys on top of the truck.

I think it has merit. I have four four-wheelers and cannot put all of them on my trailer. Also, trailers cannot attempt to go where my truck is able to go for some places I need to unload them.

I had one that loaded front to back so it didn't hang over the end of my shortbed like this one: HaulAll ATV Truck Rack Worked great for bringing two ATV's and my TT. Now we have a toyhauler so it's not necessary, but when we didn't, the rack worked great. One thing we actually liked better about the carrier than having a toyhauler is we could stay at any campground we wanted and then just take the truck and ATV's to the trailhead. With a toyhauler, you have to stay at a campground with trailhead access. They are few and far between and usually pretty rough. This is how we rolled pre-toyhauler and pre 6.7...

A lot use the quads for work. It sucks pulling a trailer down rough pipeline access and lease roads. These quad deck alleviate a lot of those problems. Not to mention pulling a trailer on mud roads in the spring to get to work site.

If I didn't have so many wheeler's, I'd use one. Being able to tow another trailer is priceless. When we were sledding hard, we used to put tow on the sled deck on my truck and hail 4 more in the enclosed trailer I was towing. It was a sled train. I loved it and it was very stable.

I sold my quad trailer, bought the deck so I could camp/hunt with my quads and travel trailer.
