I have an 87 Ranger, 2.9EFI, 5 speed with about 150,000 miles and a strange electrical habit. Everything electrical seems to work fine except the radio.
The radio/display will not work when I first start the engine, and will not turn-on/light-up until I hit the power door locks. Then the radio/display works just fine. Every once and a while when I am driving, the radio/display will totally shut down for about a second, losing all memory, then turn back on, set at a default radio station. I figure it is a loose ground - but I have no idea where to begin to look.
suspect a loose ground what you can do rather then chase it down is:
Run a wire from metal under-carriage of you dash straight to the outer case of your radio.
If it is a loose ground that will correct the problem.
