i have a alt i`d like to install in a 51 ford truck but dont know how to wire it and most people i`ve asked hav`nt even seen one the truck has no wiring at all and i`ve allready set in a perkins 354 turbo diesel so i have to make everything ,, the alt is a ford/ leece-neville 165 amp it was rebuild for a squad but was never picked up anyone know how these wire or have any info? thanks for the help!!!!!!
Piece of cake. Here's what ya need to do.
You need to buy an inexpencive alt and a regulor. Ford of corse.
the alt runs aroug 24 bucks common on 1970-78 models. Hook up the cable from the pos side of the battery to the big pos on the alt. 8 AWG Then you'll need to run a wire from the field side of the reg to the field side on your alt. 12 awg. That's it for the alt.
Now run a wire from the pos side of the batery to the I on the reg 12 awg. now ground it real good. Make sure it is grounded before you start the truck. Other wise on these cheap solid state regs they blow out. I think I covered all the wires. It's pretty simple but when you get old things have a way of getting lost.
I would not run the "I" terminal to the battery positive. This will run the battery down. Here's a diagram if you want to run a voltmeter or amp guage. The "I" terminal is only used if you want an "idiot" light, and the whole set-up is wired a little different.
Of course all this is for a normal truck alternator. I don't know if the one you have might have a different wiring set-up.
Here's the wiring if you want an idiot light in the dash.

thanks for all the help guys but this alt is a weird set up it has 2 big posts on the back that says caution observe polarity and has a pos and neg on them ..on top it says leece-neville 14.25 reg and a small post with no markings then beside that is 3 screw holes looking from the back the one left has a tab screwed to it the middle and right one is empty hope that helps the tag reads service parts type no 7706ja under it is 14 volts under that date code9340 left tag reads unit model number a001090754 under that amps 165 under that cleveland ohio a prestolite electric business in the middle says ac ac ac neg and pos symbols sorry for all the details thought it might help
What year was the amp mfg'd? If it's relatively new, it's probably internally regulated. Therefore, no external, remote VR. In this case, the diagrams above won't help.
Just did a quick web search using your details and found the Prestolite Web Site and Leece-Neville reference data. Probably the best start come Monday would be to call the Leece-Neville Support hotline -- as referenced at:
savagetek thanks very much!!! thats the bird i was looking for,, and your right on the internal reg its preset to 14.25 volts i emailed them for a wiring chart , so just need to wait on a reply before trying to call ,,, thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you were a BIG help
