Wow, really sorry to hear about that! I'm still active duty, and I had an L5-S1 fusion back in '07. Haven't been able to bend at the waist or run much since, but a definite improvement. No doubt the most brutal thing I've ever had to go through.

I really hope things get better for you!

I pop my hood and check fluids at least once a week. This is really only because I have to disconnect a hose to fill my truck with gas

Where are you stationed? I was out if Westover AFB. I may have been able to stay in if I told the navy about the injury but I kept it quiet because the doctors kept saying it was a muscle strain. Then by the time my PFA came around it was to late and I couldn't pass and the navy changed all their weight regs so unfortunately I got an administrative separation. I was never so heart broken and disgusted in my life.

Holy crap...really?! That's insane...so after your discharge they found out that your back was screwed up?

I'm an Army recruiter stationed in Manchester. We cover the entire northeastern corner of the state. I was fortunate enough to be able to extend my enlistment to get my surgery done in 2007 before I left Active Duty. Because it was a regular honorable discharge I went into the IRR where I drove trucks for a couple of years. Because I was still technically in a reserve component it was a simple administrative transfer to put me on active status with the Army Reserve. I've been doing this since 2010. Don't really like Connecticut much, but they've taken care of me.

If it makes you feel any better the Army has gotten ruthless on how they kick people out. Some places are chaptering folks for getting written up a few times.

If it wasn't for the force reduction I probably could have stayed in but now there is no shot. My RE code is a 3F so I technically could get back in on a waiver but I came in on one so I doubt I'd get granted another. I even had people wright to our CO asking him to let me stay but he didn't care. What made me mad was that being a civilian carpenter made me an expert in the bees as a builder. I made e5 in 2 years, had my own crew in Afghanistan as a e3 that consisted if mostly e5 and a fee e6s. I was hand picked to work directly for special forces and was hand picked by a 2 star general to build his TOC. I knew my ish. I also ran classes for builders and had chiefs com to me when a project was being planned to gety opinion. But because I got hurt and all the weight and bmi standards changed I got the boot. I would have never pasedthe new standards ccoming out of bootcamp. I'm 6'2" 255lb and they had no problem having me hump someone else's gear when they went down or carry a .50cal around but the second I failed bmi by 1% I'm a piece of crap.

Whatever you had to get waivered to enlist the first time would not have to be done again. And we can waiver a 3F.

Having a fused back is another story though, unfortunately we couldn't touch that.

Maybe it's not that he didn't care, but that he didn't have a choice. Here in the Army there are all kinds of things that commanders have no choice over, such as bars to reenlistment and separation procedures. There used to be some discretion they could apply, but with the downsizing force that has largely disappeared.

Sorry for dragging your thread off topic. I really hope things get better for you!
