Towing help

I have an '03 F-250 4X4 with the 5.4L. Not sure of the tranny, but all I can do is take it out of overdrive to tow. The trailer I tow is around 6000lbs. According to my manual my capacity is 7000. My question is this: Does anyone know if it is possible to swap in the towing tranny, or if there's anything aftermarket that's a little more durable? I absolutely love my truck and would love to keep it and just beef it up a little rather than buy a new truck. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know what a towing tranny is. All 2003 F-250 5.4L trucks had a 4R100 transmission. There was no other transmission available.

Why do you take it out of overdrive to tow? It was designed to tow in overdrive. You're just lowering your fuel economy.

I was told by the Ford dealer to turn OD off when towing. I don't have the Tow/Haul on mine. I've tried leaving the OD on, but it lugs the tranny down, and shifts a lot when at highway speeds.

If it shifts a lot then you are correct to turn off OD.
