Disable key lock?

Disable key lock?
On my '88 Ranger, there is the key lock that needs to be pressed to remove the key. When I changed the ignition cylinder, I darn near went ahead and removed it. I though I better check here first, and see if I was going to disable some other function I don't know about.

I think the reason for the 'interlock' is to prevent someone from removing the key while going down the road ... and locking the steering wheel. Could make for a bad day.
If you have an automatic transmission, the same 'safety' is the need to be in P to remove the key.
