1963 223 Engine Colour

I have just taken possession of a 1963 F100 Step Side and I am still in the process of gathering information, so, what color should the rocker cover and the rest of the engine be, if anyone has some sort of list or any info at all, it would be appreciated.

Cheers

ALL 1961/65 FoMoCo engines were painted black. The valve covers were painted specific colors as this is how FoMoCo identified engine sizes for garages/body shops.

Passenger Car valve covers were usually painted different colors than truck/Econoline valve covers.

I do not recall what color the 1960/64 truck 223 I-6 valve cover was.

Beginning in 1966, all FoMoCo engines were painted Ford Corporate Blue, including the valve covers.

Thanks Number Dummy,

Mine is painted blue and I am just trying to determine if it might me the original engine or not.

Also, from the little I have read, the fan on my engine is mounted directly on the water pump, so the engine has one fan belt, although I have seen engines in trucks, from 1955 with a 223 engine, that have the fan mounted higher and separate to the water pump and therefore have two fan belts.

Not sure what to make of this?

Cheers

Blue is not original.

Why be concerned, since you have a 1963?
A 1960/65 block and head that is painted blue would not be correct, since both were painted black originally.

Many people that own 1960/65 trucks including FTE members are unaware of engine colors.

They assume Ford Corporate Blue is correct, because Ford painted engines this color for over 20 years, but didn't begin to do so until 1966.

Left upper pic from 1948/56 truck catalog / Right pic from 1957/63 truck catalog / Left lower pic from 1964/72 truck catalog.

Thanks NumberDummy,

Thinking now of my 66 Mustang, I know anything prior would have been painted black with gold valve colors.

Now I know the block in my truck is correct, being the casting number begins with C3, so it is likely somewhere along the line a previous owner may have painted it Ford Corporate Blue.

Looks like I will now paint mine black, with a red valve cover and air cleaner, have seen this combination in some pics and it does look good.

Thanks again

Cheers

Hey NumberDummy,

Would also like to see the parts number name for the 57/63 would you happen to have those, or a link to same?

Cheers

Which part numbers are you referring to? There are 1,000's of different parts on these trucks.

Sorry NumberDummy,

Just re read my post and realized what I wrote.

What I meant to say was, is there a list of part names corresponding to the engine drawings posted above.

That the list of parts associated with the parts numbered in the drawing of the 57/65 engine drawing.

Cheers

There is no way that I'm typing all this jazz. Basic part numbers have arrows pointing at their specific parts, so much is self explanatory.

1957/63 & 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalogs available on C/D's from hipoparts.com

Thanks NumberDummy,

Didn't expect you to type it all in a post, thought you might have it as a pdf you could have posted, but a link to a CD is the next best thing.

Cheers and thanks for your help once again.

If your truck was sold new in Canada, it might have been a different "colour". Some the V8's of the early 60's were.

I decoded the OP's VIN and Warranty Plate codes, his 1963 F100 was assembled in San Jose February 1963.

There is no COLOR code on the Warranty Plate, the DSO code contains 6 digits (721290), reflecting a Domestic Special Order.

However, the OP lives in Australia, and this is where he bought it.

The correct color for 1963 223 valve cover is "Ford Red" which is actually an orangish-red color. Block is all black. Here is a photo of an original paint 223 cover. Oil cap with hose attachment is newer, necessary to comply with the California smog retrofit program during the 70's.
