Hi everyone, I'm having a strange issue with my 2008 F350 6.4. I have only had this truck for about 2 months now. Every time it gets wet (from rain or a carwash), the 4x4 low light begins flashing, and the truck surges badly at low speeds. When I get above about 25 MPH, the light stops, and the truck runs normally. At the next stoplight, it happens all over again. After a couple days of dry time (?), the truck is back to normal (until it gets wet again).
I have found a couple of old threads involving some similar symptoms, but they were never resolved on this forum (that I could find). I believe the transfer case selector motor has been replaced at some point, as it has a Dorman brand sticker on it. I wouldn't think Ford would use Dorman parts as original equipment.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, I love this truck, but I hate having to check the weather forecast to drive it!
I can assure you ford didn't put dorman anything on it you may want to start at the selector motor check that conntection for corrision and trace the wires back up as far as you can to either the main engine harness or where ever they go looking or chaffing a repair damage to the loom I would think is covering it. If you don't see anything I guess you could drive to the ford dealer in the rain or just spary underneth with a hose to make sure it's acting up and have them diag. it for you and maybe you can fix it yourself and save a little cash. It may just need a new oem shift motor that one may begetting wet and shorting out somehow. Ford and dorman and other aftermarket brands don't seem to play well together especially on the diesels.
Well Mike, I think I figured out a few things today, based on your suggestions. #1 the dealer wants $525 for a t.c. shift motor. #2 when I spray my t.c. with a garden hose, that is when the light starts flashing. #3 this Dorman crap haunts me constantly. I just had a hvac actuator go bad in my wife's Explorer three months ago. It is a 2007, and when I went to replace it, Dorman was the name. I used to manage a car parts store years ago, and the Dorman stuff was useful in their HELP! line, and that's about it. Anyways, now I just need to figure out if the water is infiltrating the motor, or the wiring. I appreciate your help, and any further suggestions, thank you!
Try here for parts. https://parts.autonationfordwhitebearlake.com usually they have much better prices than local dealer. If you go to ford parts.com and select them as your dealer you can get 9.99 next day shipping. Sounds like you found the problem though. The only thing I've ever found dorman helpful for is the part # interchange on there website if you can't find a motorcraft part #.
A couple of days ago, I removed the tc shift motor. I sealed all of the seams with rtv, everyplace where water may have gotten in. I also removed the wire loom, inspected the wiring, and thoroughly retaped all of it. Yesterday, right when I was going to pull into the car wash(to test my work), it started acting up again. This time it was bone dry. I tried unplugging the tc motor, but the light still flashed. I also unhooked the batteries for an hour. No change. Any other ideas before I take this thing to the dealer?
