2 - 4 bbl set up

I bought something at a yard sale in my neighborhood yesterday that I need help identifying. It is an aluminum 2 X 4 intake mainfold for the "Y" block. It came with 2 holley 4 bbls. that look like nothiing I have ever seen. They have a square bore, but that's were any comparison stops. It has 2 bbls (I can't tell which is the front!) that would exit the top like any carb, but the other 2 are at the side of what looks like a hat on top of the set up. The whole thing is about 8" tall.

What do I have? You'll never guess what I paid for it: $10.00!

You have, possibly a Edelbrock 257, one of the best intakes
for the Y, the carbs sound like Holley T-pots, which are a royal
PITA to rebuild...

AMHIK...

I am going to put a couple of small holleys on it. I don't think the one's I have are worth anything.

What would be a good size of carb(s) for this small engine?

...by the way - the intake is a dual plane type.

Fifty4, I'm running a 2-4 setup on my 55 T-bird, it works great, it is aluminum and is off a 57 Thunderbird, this was an option and on the 312 produced 270 hp. This is what it looks like if you need some kind of reference

I think I'll keep it if I only use it for a display piece in my shop!

The carbs that came with this would have a large snorkle like thing that would be covered up by the breathers you have. Where did you get them, by the way?

I wonder what my 239" engine will do with that much carberation???

Glenn, I got the intake/ carb setup at a swap meet. I think the air cleaners are the same as those used on the Buick 401 2-4 setup, but that's just a guess.
The part of the carb that sticks up under the air cleaner is the float bowl, they used this type carb. (only it was the larger one off the Lincoln) with the Paxton supercharger because the float would be under the same pressure as the intake charge and wouldn't flood out.

Fifty4,
I do not believe that the 2-4 intake will work well on your 239 unless you have later model heads installed. The ports are so different that the intake gasket may not seal properly. The 2-4 setup could be too much carburetion for the engine (especialy with a stock cam) and cause driveability problems. I may be wrong but I think this is the way it is.

I have heard those called stovepipe Holleys or upright holleys. I have never owned a car with them. The 2x4 also came in passenger cars.
A highway patrolman who retired in the 1980s once told me his favorite car of all time was a 57 Ford 300 with a 312 with dual 4s and a 3 speed/overdrive. And he had driven the 440 mopars (his second favorite) 427 fords 427 chevys ect. that they used in the 60s and 70s.

Glenn:
Those "stovepipe" Holleys are actually 2140's. 1954 & 55 was the first (and only) time that Ford/Mercury offered those. Yet take into account that this carb model was only available for 2 years and it will only fit certain manifolds since the distance between bores (bolts) is only 96mm. From 56 on you have the actual Holley design. The bores are 33mm each, so I guess it's ok for a 239.
Holley advertised this as the "Centri-Quad" DownDraft Carburetor . Yes very weird to say the least but once again, the original ones during 54/55. The intake is probably an Edelbrock or an Offy (being aluminum it's aftermarket), but different from the 56 - on. These carbs where offered in: 1954 Ford 8cyl engine – Standard Transmission, 1953-1954 Lincoln 8cyl – 318cu.in
1954 Mercury 8cyl – 256 cu.in – Standard & Auto Transmission.

patagonia.man, are you saying that later model 4 bbls will not fit this manifold?

The smallest Holleys I been able to find are 300 cfm. I think 600 cfm is still too much for a stock 239!

Hi Glenn:
I'm not talking about CFM, (I'll try to find out what the 2140's cfm move). All I'm saying is that those stovepipes are pretty strange and that the distance between bolts is not the usual Holley, Carter distance, but much smaller. And yes, even with a healthy cam and 80%plus volumetric efficiency... 600 cfm will only be needed above 6000 RPM on a 239

sorry, I forgot your first question: YES, later model 4 bbls will NOT fit this manifold.

...looks like the carbs on your T'bird are similar to the ones I have. How did you get them rebuilt? Do they work good?
