Nothing really to gain in the '04, they are all pretty much the same. I Guess they are going up, I paid 9 for my nice Limited 4 years ago with 120k miles. The suspension, engines, etc. are all the same. I think the grill is different in '05 and maybe '04, and maybe some very minor things. Good miles on that '00!
You will like it.........then stick with FTE
The only real changes in the V-10 between those years was that the newer ones have the better head design that has more threads for the sparkplugs, the earlier ones only have a couple of threads for the plugs and some have a history of spitting plugs if they are not changed and torqued properly. Ride quality should be about they same, the EXs all share the same suspensions and those two are pretty close in miles. Spend some time under the rigs and look for any rust issues. What are the plans for the EX? If you are going to be towing with it the 4.30 gears make the V-10 happier to climb hills, the V-10s either have the more common 3.73 gears or the less common but better towing 4.30s. Another thing to consider if towing is in the plans is that the 2000's hitch is rated at a lower trailer weight than the 2004, both hitches and drive trains are the same but the newer models got larger bolts holding the hitches to the frame, it's an easy bolt swap to upgrade it to the newer spec.
Thanks for the responses. The EX will be my wife's daily driver as it is replacing our 02 expy. And it will be the road trip vehicle as we have some big trips coming up. The biggest reason for getting one is basketball and wrestling season the expy has 0 room for gear or anything for that matter behind the 3rd row. For towing we will tow our boat (3800 lbs) 20 mile round trip to the launch. No matter which way we go there is a 10% grade to get home.

There are actually quite a few differences between the 2000 Limited and the 2004 Limited.
The 2004 Limited will have additional features that the 2000 Limited doesn't have like:
-Dual Power, memory, heated seats
-Automatic Climate control
-On wheel controls for the radio and A/C
-Other updates to the interior and rest of the vehicle that address previous issues.
You can always negotiate the price down on the 2004, but if it were me, I'd go for the '04. Between my '01 and '05 Excursion, I find the '05 to be much more comfortable than the '01 becuase of the additional creature comforts, but especially because of the 6.0

But the 2000 has heated seats and he can see what they both have anyway. I wouldn't want any of that stuff, just more to go wrong. Every useless climate control I ever had turned out to be an expensive nightmare.
They both have dual heated power seats and EATC... I have rebuilt 2 EATC one in an explorer and one in our expy... My SD has the basic ****. 240k still works awesome

You're absolutely sure the 2000 model has automatic climate control? That wasn't an option until the 2002 model year on the Excursion. The same goes for dual power, heated seats unless they retrofitted later seats into the earlier truck.
With the 2000 you had the option of heated seats, but only the driver seat was power. The passenger seat was a manual seat that you had to pull up a handle to move.
Just making sure someone isn't trying to take you for a ride....
