There's other engines out there other than Cummins. Perkins is an industrial diesel that will get over 40 MPG with the correct set up. Also, ....FORD made diesel trucks. I just swapped in a 7.3L in a '79 F250. You can get a donor truck that runs and drives for about what you'd spend on just the 6BT Cummins.

The common Ford-type tranny used with the 4BT is the BW T-19 with 4:1 low. In addition to a Ford bell, you will need a Cummins block to Ford bellhousing adapter. These are not so common.
