Believe it or not, if the pin/latch at the front of the hood are too far forward, it raises the rear of the hood. They are adjustable.
Greeting from another NM member! Where are you in NM?
Actually on the 53 - 56 the adjustment is the other way around. Move the latch forwards to pull the cowl end of the hood down. But if all the hinge pivots are not free it will still open, but will never work properly.

The hinge arms must be able to oscillate slightly on the hinge bolts as the hood opens and closes, so they need to be the proper sized shoulder bolts with the OEM style wavy spring washers on them. The bolts should be just snugged (about finger tight), and a safety wire threaded thru the holes in the heads. The safety wire does not require any fancy twisting, you are just preventing turning due to vibration, just a simple loop thru the two bolts with the ends hooked to each other is all that's required and was what was done from the factory. If the nuts on the hood are torn off or stripped out, Mid Fifty sells replacement nuts and oversized self tapping bolts.
my recollection is that the hood worked correctly before I removed it to replace the 272
(I know originally it had a 239 flat head) with a powerful rebuilt 292 from a 64 pickup I bought just for the engine. did someone say I could purchase the original shouldered bolts?
Tomorrow morning give Mid Fifty a call Home - Mid Fifty F-100 Parts and ask them to send you one of their free catalogs. You can download it on their website, but there is so much useful info in it that you'll want to have a copy close at hand while working on your truck. If they don't have what you need you probably don't need it or it isn't made. MF can't be beat for their knowledge, helpfulness, and service! All the ladies there definitely know the 53-56.
