Maybe a dumb question; I'm going to look at a used ZF5 for my 85' F350 460 4x4. I'm not familiar enough with the Ford stuff yet to recognize the different bell housing patterns, how can I verify that the trans I look at will indeed fit a 460 and is not of the small block or diesel variety?
Also, it is my understanding that the Ford T-case bolt patterns are pretty consistent and this trans should bolt up to my T-case?
Are you gonna be looking at transmissions laid out on a floor and separated from the engines or in vehicles? If it's in the vehicle then it's easy because the only ZF that will work is from behind another 460 so just ignore any small block or diesel trucks.

It is separated from the engine and t-case.
From the link you attached, it looks like it would be fairly easy to differentiate between the small black and 460 mounting patterns, how about the diesel?
It's going to be tough to figure out if it's a diesel or not. Here's a thread, the top holes are the same, some of the others are not. It would be nice to get a model number to go by when doing this.

That site requires logging in to view pics. Any chance you could copy/paste the pic here? This seems to come up at least once a month, would be nice to have a pic in the FAQ section we could refer folks to.......
Sorry about that. Here it is, a guy with the handle 'type4" made this picture/diagram.
The final answer is, 4 holes and 2 dowels are different, the top ones will work.
I bolted a 460 to my diesel zf. After drilling.
blue original idi holes
pink idi dowels
green 460 bolts
brown 460 dowels
red 460 starter.
Thanks! Great info here. Hopefully the trans I'm going to look at is of the 460 variety, I do not think I want to mess with drilling new holes and locating dowels. I will post pics up if I'm successful purchasing this thing.
It does explain the tag numbers, so you know which you're looking for.
(if you can still read it)
Thanks Jim. Now I know what to look for when I finally get my new transmission. That document is great as it has the gear ratio as well for both gas and IDI.
