3V swap?

Saw the thread asking about SeaFoam in a 3 valve V10, and wondered if anyone here has looked into or completed a 3V swap in an Excursion. Both the HP and TQ figures on the 3V are higher, but probably not enough to warrant the expense I'm guessing.

Still, it would have a high cool factor.

I think most willing to do any kind of swap are going to go cummins route or 7.3 like Sunlinefan (not sure he ever finished his though).

Another 52 horsepower and far superior transmission is a significant improvement. But getting the electronics to play nice with your existing bits wouldn't be a trivial matter. I'd love to see it done, but it wouldn't be easy!

Of which issues do you speak? The fact that they don't eject spark plugs, break off manifold studs, or need transmission upgrades to survive?

Other than perhaps the need to swap to a one-piece plug, what's the big deal with a 3v V10?

I would not want a 3V either and the reason you ask is the cam phazers, way worse than a spark plug issue...

The 3V V10 doesn't have cam phasers.

3v 5.4 do have manifold issues. You can ask my bank account about them if you have any questions

Don't know about the v10 though. Just thought I would throw my info out there

Search for the term "phaser" in the V10 forum and it's brought up a few times. I remember reading a few years ago that the V10 never got them because of a resonance issue, but I can't find it now. Unfortunately the guy I would ask for more details died a couple of years ago.

3v V10's are reliable, just the manifold studs breaking and oil cooler gaskets...well and failing coils are really the only issues I have seen with them.

I thought I was reading a 6.0 hate thread for a second...then I realized my error. alot of hate for the 5.4 3v.

the 5.4 3v is a drop dead reliable motor. the cam phaser issues are almost exclusively caused by using the wrong oil filter, and the wrong weight of oil. I've had a couple of these motors and wouldn't hesitate to buy another. Internet scare tactics or not!
if you religiously use the FL-820s Motorcraft filter and nothing else, you should be good. There is a design problem with the phasers that leads to ticking noises and eventual possible failure down the road. The problem stems to guys using the wrong oil filter. Aftermarket oil filters have shoddy ANTI-DRAINBACK valves. They let the upper portion of the engine drain down. So on startup you get quite a bit of metal to metal friction and wear...multiply that over countless start cycles and stuff wears out. Using a FL-820s filter pretty much negates that.

conversely, they do occasionally break a spark plug or 8 when you change the plugs. Tool to fix is about $100. Not a problem.

now all that being said: I would love to slap a V-10 3v into my Excursion. You get instant HP/TQ gains, and you get the wicked awesome 5R110 transmission (5 speed). Win/Win

The swap would be pretty easy. All the existing hardware like mounts already exist. Just park a 2005-2007 truck next to your Excursion and start picking. I'd recommend doing the dash upgrade to 05-07 style while swapping the wiring harness since you're already in there. The SD trucks didn't get PATS until 2008, so that would make the swap even easier IMO.

Alternatively, you can re-use your 2v PCM...but it will be tricky. I've seen guys re-use their 2v PCM's to control the 3v and 4v variants. But it required a ton of custom coding and some tricky customization of the wiring harnesses. So best bet IMO is do a 100% harness swap and instrument cluster swap.

best of luck. Keep us updated if you proceed. I want a PSD under my hood...but if I were to come across a 05-07 donor truck with V-10 3v for the right price...well that'd be a pretty easy decision
