02 4.6. 175k miles.I had P0401 code from time to time. My idle would crash to 300rpm coming to a stop, sometimes stalling. Idled a little rough about half way up the warm up cycle. Been doing it for months. Occasionally and intermittently, i kept putting it off.
Picked up EGR gasket, IAC gasket, two throttle gaskets, 18pk blue light and a couple cans of carb cleaner. and just waited for a raining day.
I just tackled this job yesterday. PC of cake.. Not to hard, But it does takes a while.
The truck runs night and day different. I read about this on FTE and figured this was the issue so i have been dreading it. I was hoping it wasn't going to be a waist of time and wanted to see plugged ports so badly . So when i lifted the throttle body off i was so glad to see it. wow. took some cleaning to get them cleaned up. It was really in there like epoxi.
I would say, do it if you have some miles on the vehicle. Has to be done sooner or later.
Another day of driveing. Still running like a champ. I can't believe the difference at idle and coming to a stop.
One thing i noticed , And don't care much because of how nice it is over the plugged ports. The idle sits comes down to 650 for about 5 seconds and jumps up to 8/900 then slowly down to 650 again for another 5 seconds and repeats that cycle. Almost like the ac compressor is on. But it wasn't. I am thinking my IAC is messing up? I have another one i should try. Maybe it didn't take well to the cleaning? I will leave it if it is big deal. I don't sweat the small stuff.
How long did it take start to finish? Any tips on tackling the job? And what was the cost of the gaskets? Mine has 240k on it, but idles fine. I don't generally like to tinker with things that have no issues, but it would be nice to know for future reference.
