I'm sitting at the light the other day and I'm hearing what sounds like a ricer sitting next to me. I look around and find nothing, hit the gas when the light turned green (didn't hear it anymore). At the next light, same thing.
Turn off the AC, the 'growl' goes away. Turn it on and it's back.
AC compressor/clutch going out?
I did notice it goes on and off (mostly on)...does the compressor alternate on and off when you have the manual environmental controls (not the digital ones that maintain a set temp)?
The compressor clutch cycles based on the load on the system, not whether you have manual or auto controls. Mild, cool weather might only require the clutch to run a small percentage of the time while a hot, humid summer day might cause it to run continuously.
Had a noticeable growling with the A/C on my '08 F250. Turned out to be a bad compressor, but I could hear it going down the highway and it disappeared the second I turned the A/C off.
