At least thats what I call it.
89 will not start unless the clutch is pressed. I have an intermittent problem. Anyone know where this switch/sensor is located?

The switch is located on the side of the transmission.

not sure where.

should have two wires, and can be unplugged.

probably removed with a 5/8 socket.

you could bypass the switch, that way you wouldn't have to press the clutch in to start.

it keeps you from starting the truck in any gear.

my ford does the same,

it wont start unless the clutch is pressed in.

I had another vehicle, and if you wanted you could start the vehicle in any gear and it would pull the truck forward and the truck would move, but not start, without the clutch pressed in or anything. but it would not start in gear.

I think the switch wasn't wired on that vehicle though. or was broke.

doing that was not good on the transmission though.

its good to have the switch to where it cannot start in any gear, it protects your transmission from unnecessary ware. and by designing the truck to where you have to press the clutch in, makes sure you do not do any unnecessary damage to your transmission.

you could bypass it though, not sure how.

On my '88 the switch is located under the dash, almost directly above the gas pedal.

I cannot recall the colors of the wires I had to splice to bypass it. The switch itself sits on the rod running through the firewall, and is prone to moving around and getting out of position.

Thanks for the info everyone. I thought that is where it would be but didn't see it. I'll look again

Clutch-Mounted Safety Switch

Manual-transmission equipped trucks had a safety switch mounted on the clutch pedal linkage to prevent starting until the clutch pedal was depressed. The purpose was to prevent cranking the engine with the transmission in gear, while the clutch was engaged. Under those conditions, the engine can start and lurch the vehicle into motion.

The "neutral" safety start switch is used on automatic transmission equipped vehicles, to allow starting in neutral or park, only. impish
