A bad or failing positive cable/connection could absolutely make starting more difficult because it is sapping electrons from the ignition circuit at the very moment of highest current demand ... the older truck manuals spec 500 to 900 amps starting draw for V8, that's quite a lot of juice in a split second! Good cables and ground connections all around, I call it the $20 tune-up, it's good insurance.
Ithink the whole problem was was worn cables. The starter cable was rubbed raw agaisnt the frame, and shorted the starter. I then think that sent a jolt along the old worn positive. Before this the battery posts were fine after this there was a chunk missing in the positive post.
Thursday morning a fresh ground strap is going to be put in.

That wouldn't short the starter? Sure cause problems though. If you look at the pics in my garage just replaced an old ford starter cable that was pretty toasted. Ford's early foray into fusible links... Now I'm thinking about getting a roll of welding cable and connectors and roll yer own.
Maybe a nice set of heavy cables connecting both sides of the frame to block, and a heavy cable from head bolt to headbolt, with main battery cable connecting there. Some folks run a heavy wire from distributor to block, too. If you run a trailer, the body ground strap and connections is important.
The starter was working fine before this. Maybe it coincidentally went out at same time. The part shop did test it when it was exchanged as a core. It was bad.
Good luck finding a good one, or take care of it... Crawling around underneath the truck just doesn't do it for me, if starters crap out on a yearly deal. The remanufactured ones seem real hit and miss.

In the past I've always bought brand new starters. This time I had to risk a rebuilt one. It was the only one in stock in that small town. Due to work schedule, I had no time to wait for new one to get delivered.
I hope it lasts. I believe the one I pulled off was a rebuild, it looked too clean to have been on long. Had a made in Mexico sticker in it.
