You shouldn't need an "O" ring on flared end tubing provided they mate up together well. You could try some plumber's tape around the threads of the nut for a better (air tight) seal. That looks like your tank in the picture....so heat would not be an issue with the tape there.
Agree with Turbohunter on checking for gas tank venting/equalized pressure, too.
I pulled the filler cap off and it didn't make any difference. Does this mean tank is venting ok?
Probably...but I would do a visual check on the lines from your tank to the cannister for being pinched. Check those vacuum lines at the can, too.
OK...let me re-group.....you said you have good flow from the tank to the pump, correct?
And from the pump to the filter to the carb is where the problem lies, yes?
Have you disconnected the feed line from the pump to the carb, at the carb, and tried cranking her? Do you get good flow from the pump?
Have you checked the carb float(s) for correct position?
Forgive me if these questions were already asked/answered...just trying to put things in order......and being a grumpy old fart, I'm a bit slow in memory.
Thanks for all of your help. Umm..I forgot to mention this truck has 2 tanks. Between the two is the switch valve. As an experiment, I directly connected the in-cab tank to the main fuel line. Apparently the valve is bad, because the truck runs smooth now. I apologize profusely for not mentioning this before.
Ps. I'm a young fart who lost my patience prematurely. I got a metal shaving in my eye. The eye doc decided to scrape it out with a long pointed probe. @#$%! I posted this thread right after my appt.
It's a PO installed setup. Label on the switch says Travel Tanks. Located on the left side of steering wheel. I'll take the valve with me to the parts store and find something similar.

No problem on your being peckish after the eye deal. Understandable! Been there myself many years ago. Not a picnic wearing an eye patch with the antibiotic junk oozing out from under the patch, and trying to do stuff.
Glad to see you have a handle on the situation, and moving forward. Good luck.
I also thought that a mechanical pump just worked or it didn't but after mine failed altogether this winter my truck starts easier and the clear filter does fill where as it would only fill half way with the tired old pump.
