The steering box went out on my '59 and I'm trying to find another one. I had two in my spare parts collection but unfortunately I recently moved and had to get rid of them, of course this was about two weeks before the box went out. I'd like to do the power steering swap but just don't have an extra $800 kicking around.
Does anyone have a spare box they would sell me? Preferable from a bigger truck like a 500 or 600(I believe they were stronger and lower geared than say the F100s, also the one I have now is from a '59 F600) and preferable one without too much slop.
Right now I'm living in Havre, MT but am always up for a road trip so anywhere in MT is a possibility. Also I will be going back to western WA in a few weeks (which is where my truck is) so I could pick it up there too.

I have a F100 box out of my 1960 with the shaft cut off if interested. PM me and I'll give you my phone number.

B9T-3504-B .. Steering Gear / Housing marked: 5DC25 // 1959/60 F600 with 6,000 lbs. front axle capacity.
IMO, you should "fix what you got." Play in the steering wheel is usually caused by worn sector shaft bushings that are, for the B7Y box....the same for F100/600's.
The old one is completely shot. It feels like the gear is stripped. When you try to turn the wheel there is some resistance but it just skips/catches but won't let you apply enough force turn the wheels. It worked fine the 3 years I've had the truck going then one afternoon this happened.
Does anyone have a diagram/breakdown of the box? I'm in Montana right now and the truck and manual are in WA. I know how they work but I've never actually taken one apart. I might have to find a new shaft/bushings if I can't find a new box.

There is an adjustment screw and jamb nut on the side of the box. I would play with that first with truck on jack stands if you say it all of a sudden went out.
Well I started having problems one afternoon and it got worse and worse, I was able to limp home but by the time I got there steering was pretty much non-existent. I did adjust it about 3 years ago when I got the truck on the road. I'll try adjusting again but I guess I just assumed the gear must have stripped.

Do NOT mess with that nut! It only sets the sector shaft preload, over tighten it, the gearbox could lock up.
When this occurs, backing the nut off may not do any good.
The only parts catalog pic is a 'universal' for all three different 1957/60 F100/600 gearboxes:
There are a few more helpful pics in the manual but alas, I am not capable of posting them. As Bill stated, do not try to adjust your way out of a repair by moving the sector shaft screw. Things can go from bad to worse.
After doing some more research I think I'm just going to try to track down a new box for now. I found a rebuild kit but it's $200 which is way more than I feel a stock manual box is worth even if it is rebuilt.
I just need to get it mobile again for now and when I have a little more free time and money I'll upgrade to power steering.
