fuel issues..

I know it has been discussed before but I couldn't find anything. I have a 1996 ford f250 7.5l 460 and it appears that the rear tank is filling the front tank. On the last refill I used the front tank till it was basically dry and switched to the rear, however, I could literally watch the guage drop as I drove. Once I got to about 3/8 of a tank I switched to the front tank and now it was up to 3/8 of a tank. I then filled both tanks and started on the rear to see what would happen and it started to make the front one overflow. Someone told me it could be the fuel pump or a check valve going bad. Any help would be helpful and how hard is it to switch the two fuel pumps?

I have a 1996 F250 351 and just changed the pump in the front tank this past weekend. Mine was doing the exact same thing. It is the pump in your front tank that needs replaced. It is not a terrible job if you have a good place to work on it and maybe a friend to help would be nice. Good luck.

Thank you. Where did you get the pump and more or less how much. Did you have to relieve the fuel pressure?

I ordered the second pump down on the page:

96 1996 Ford F250 Fuel Pump - Fuel Delivery - Action Crash, Airtex, Autobest, Carter, Delphi, Denso, Hella, Motorcraft, Spectra Premium, Rear - PartsGeek

Airtex 5334-07005793. It seemed like a nice pump. I had great pressure and volume when finished and no more crossflow problems. I also had an issue with loosing my prime after about an hour and that is gone as well.

Like I mentioned above, my fuel pressure would relieve itself after about an hour or two but you can also remove your passenger-side kick panel and behind it is your fuel shut-off (red button). You can pop it up with a screwdriver through a small slot and simply start the vehicle and let it run out of fuel (5-10 seconds or so). Just don't forget to reset it (push it back down) after you install your fuel pump or you will have no power to them.

Good luck
Mike

Thank you Mike. I was told to get the airtex pump and that's a good price. I have to burn the fuel out of the tank before I take it down.
