Fuel "Quick Disconnect" Tool PSA

1994 F150 4.9L

Public Service Announcement for those not aware....

In the year I've owned this truck, I've replaced both the midship and rear fuel pumps. I did the front about 8 months ago, and the rear this weekend.

When doing the front, I tried to use the little plastic disconnect tools in my box that I purchased when doing the fuel filter:

My fuel filter always came off fairly quickly with these, but the front FDM was impossible. The smaller (return line I believe) one would always come off quickly, but the larger line would not budge, no matter how much PB blaster/Brake Cleaner/curse words I tried. I ended up changing out the pump under the truck, and got everything put back together and working properly. Wouldn't recommend it....

So I go to change the rear pump this weekend, thinking that I probably just had a bad connector on the front, and that there was NO WAY it would be as difficult to remove.... WRONG. Same story. One came off quick, the other was stubborn as a mule. Installed the pump under the truck again, but couldn't get the retaining ring on due to no slack on the lines. Just wouldn't go.

So I went to advance and got this:

Needless to say, 10 seconds after getting under the truck with this tool, the line was free. None of the pulling, pushing, etc. BS that accompanied the plastic tool.

And boy, is that job a lot easier when NOT under the truck!

I may have to go pick those up. I hate those little plastic things. They just waste space in my tool box.

My experience on my last truck, '92 F350, was exactly the opposite. The metal tools were completely useless. The cheapo plastic versions were the hot ticket.

YMMV....

On an '89 F-250 I had, believe it or not; with the aid of a chain fall, I lifted the bed by removing 6 bolts and tail light harnesses and found and repaired things with ease that I wasn't even aware were bad. Talk about access! Wow. I had to change the side fuel tank due to a rusted pinhole in the top (original reason for the work). Also got to the Brake & Fuel lines, driveshaft, Emergency cables, fixed a wire harness and removed surface rust, both fuel pumps, the diverter valve & used EndRust and put on a few coats of black spray paint. Even replaced the old class 3 hitch with a class 5. Man was that nice to see and repair everything in a standing position... The bed pretty near balances with tailgate off it on the center mount holes. Have a couple concrete blocks to move about the bed and it will pick straight up. Just a thought. No muss no fuss!
