You will not get 12-13 around town with the gasser, it will be closer to 10. I have had the V-10 in a F-250 before, the mileage was disgusting to me and I said I would never own another one. When I was Ex shopping I hated seeing all the gassers at half the price of the 7.3. I had to keep reminding myself how disappointing that mileage was.
I can be a little unbiased. I have both. Not sure what year your f-150 is, but the 09' and up tow great (I have 5.4) up into the 9-10,000 lbs range getting 10-11 mpg doing so. Get 14-15 around town and 17+ on the highway. 09 and up have a huge cab and with little kiddos you can fill the floor up with cargo and their little hanging legs never touch it anyway.
With that being said, I love my Ex, so do the kids!!
The gas mileage is awful. Fill your foot with helium if you want, it'll still suck. The diesels will get you closer to 18+ highway but that's still not amazing. If you want one you have to look at the benefits of owning one and decide if those benefits outweigh the terrible gas mileage.
You also have to realize most of if not all will need some sort of repair. The youngest ones are still almost 10 years old and none of them are getting any newer. But there's nothing on the road like it
Just got done with test drive. A few questions. Was surprised at the power and how peppy it was. It drove well too. My question is that it seemed to have a few squeeks and rattles. It could be nothing, I'm picky. Even for an 05, my truck is rock solid. Are the rattles and squeeks normal for an 02?
I've owned diesel and gas Excursions. For me, I prefer the gas engine. When we use it, it's short trips a lot of the time (but not all the time) and it's a lot less hassle for maintenance. And also my usage changed, I towed a lot when I had my diesel, now I barely tow. I think a V-10 Excursion is your cheapest vehicle cost, Expedition EL will most likely cost more than a diesel Excursion (depending on year) and as others have said, the Ex will be harder to park but I'm sure you'd park far out with whatever you buy, especially a more expensive diesel or Expedition. Yes the V10 gets terrible mileage but they don't cost much to get into and you can buy a lot of gas with the difference in money. We have two small kids, a lab and usually 1-2 in-laws plus gear (strollers etc) in it most times. I can't imagine doing this with anything else.
It would be abnormal for it not to squeek and rattle
That's kinda what I was thinking. It also had a little wheel hop on braking. I really liked it, just wondering about those issues. I was really surprised at the power it had. Before I knew it I was at 60. A lot quicker than my 5.4, even with the added weight of the Excursion.

The warped rotor feeling is very common on the Excursions. i cured mine with Power Slot cryo treated rotors and hawk sever duty pads.
At that age changes are like mine the ball joints, shocks, swap bar end links are all factory and making some noise and ready to be replaced.
Even if you had to dump some money into it, if you bought it for $8k and put $2K into it for basic mileage/age related maintenance items…you would have a rock solid daily driver and family hauler, for much cheaper then a 07-up Expedition.
