RIP Expedition

Sadly, our 2000 Expedition met its demise Monday when our daughter dropped it off the side of the road and rolled over into the ditch. Thankfully, she and her 2 friends walked away basically unhurt (a few bumps, bruises and scratches, but the truck and seatbelts kept them from serious harm). Now comes the task of finding a replacement. I would like to stay with another Expedition for the safety, comfort and hauling/towing capabilities. My wife isn't sure what she would like, but would prefer something that gets better gas mileage. Does anyone have a rough idea if the newer body style that has the 2 wheel drive setting on the transfer case does noticeably better on fuel than the awd like the 2000 had? Or maybe a suggestion of an alternative to the Expedition that would be able to seat 4-6 full size adults (my wife, daughters, and I are all 6' or over), and tow at least 5K lbs. So far the only thing my wife is sure of is she doesn't want an Explorer or a Crown Vic, so at least its narrowed down a little. Thanks in advance for any ideas/comments.

I would take a look at the diesel excursion. Not possitive on the gas milage, but everybody I have talked to said they were getting about 20mpg. Thats 5 more than I am getting with my navigator. Plus the seating room and storage is far better. Over the last couple months I have also noticed that diesel costs less that regular unleded. Glad your kid is ok.

Foremost, glad your children are o.k. Gotta have priorities.

Stick with the Expedition size vehicle. After being on the receiving end of a 58,000 pound trash truck running a red light, I will never again own a compact car or truck. Gas milage might be a pain, but every accident investigator told me that were it not for the Nissan Hardbody I was in being the toughest of the tough little trucks, I and my wife would have been dead. I vowed never to go small for economy again. Crash tests are too controlled. I want to know what the Chevy Aveo looks like after a Suburban with a soccer mom chatting on a cell phone k.o.'s it looks like. Bet it won't rate 5 stars

We've been contimplating trading our Expy in on something more effiecient. My wife really like the Expedition for size and comfort, but we are thinking of looking at the new Jeep Liberty with the Common Rail Diesel. It's rated to tow 5000 lbs, gets 21-26 mpg, and has plenty of power. That's just what we have found in our research, but haven't actually located one to drive just yet. We have also been considering an Excursion diesel, because they do get better mileage, especially when towing, but the size really worries my wife. She likes the idea of the Ford Escape hybrid, but size become an issue. Not sure about the Liberty for size either. There's my 2cents. I'm trying to talk her into a SuperDuty F350 Crew Cab, with the diesel, but she's not really into that, yet.

Thanks for the comments and ideas, the diesel Excursion is one of the vehicles I would prefer, but not sure the wife will go for it. For mileage purposes, would the older (pre2003 I think) 7.3 be preferable, or in real life is it pretty much a tossup with the later 6.0? I know the 6.0 had some problems in the beginning, but haven't really done a lot of checking into the mileage comparison yet.

Go put her in the 03+ Expy. My wife would have nothing to do with the 1st generation but she was wow'd with the new styling.

Gas mileage still stinks but the 300 hp is nice on the newer 5.4L.

There really aren't many options for seating 6 adults and decent gas mileage and 5000 lb towing capacity.

Jeep is producing the full size Commander that seats 7 and has the CRD. Probably too much truck for the motor in my opinion. Time will tell.

The difference between the 6.0 and 7.3 Powerstrokes is marginal as far as mileage is concerned. The 6.0's did have a lot of trouble in the beginning, as do most new automotive engines, but Ford is past that now. I have experienced a lot of problematic 7.3 Powerstrokes too, and in my book, it's really a toss-up.

The 6.0 makes a good bit more power, and feels like a completely different engine, and is super quiet.

That'd be my finest wish as well. Don't know why none of the Big 3 put diesels in anything other than their high-end trucks. Must have to do with fleet emission standards.

Have a 2002 4WD Drive Expy, and took my brother in laws 2004 on a long haul run with some city. Overall, the 2004 got about 3 more MPG, while hauling down the highway at around 75 - 80 MPH average speed. Way better mileage around town as well.

I bought an early build 03 E.B. with the 2wd, awd, 4wh, 4wl selector. I haven't noticed and diff in the milage between 2wd and awd. No problem with anything else on the truck (except the tilting mirrors) and avg. approx 14MPG according to the computer. I have 40,00 on it now. My wife drives it to work and as a "Mom's Taxi" for all the kids events. Nothing but good things to say about the truck. Anything bigger would be a waste for me. I also tow a Travel Trailer approx 6,00lbs on the weekends. It is a very safe vehicle.
Sometimes, if I'm good, she lets me drive it

As a long-time Super Duty owner, I've come to learn that most (not all) diesel owners tend to stretch the truth a little on their economy. For those who actually DO get around 20MPG, they kind of forget to tell you that they never-ever exceed 2000 RPMs. I suggest a couple of days of trying to drive at/below 2000 RPMs (with 3.73 gears) to see if you can tolerate it! If it's too slow for you, then you can kiss those high-MPG numbers goodbye.

Trust me, I believed the diesel hype and it's not all it's cracked up to be. And when it turns cold, watch the price of diesel go higher than that of unleaded. Factor in those 14-quart oil changes, fuel additives, expensive filters, etc. and any MPG savings is gone!

My personal experience on various trips to Dallas from Tulsa:
2001 F350 V10/3.73 gears Crew Cab 4x4 longbed- 15.4 MPG
2003 GMC Duramax/3.73 gears Extended Cab 4x2 shortbed- 18.2 MPG
2004 Expedition 5.4L/3.73 gears 4x4- 18.1 MPG

I traded the diesel for another Crew Cab V10 Super Duty. I'll be taking the Expedition to Dallas next week.

Thanks again for the info guys. Still waiting to see what the insurance will pay for the Expedition, which will factor heavily in what it gets replaced with. Wife says no way on the Excursion (too big), so I guess the possible fuel economy benifits of the diesels are a moot point anyway. She may end up just driving the Bronco or the F250 for a while, which will make her appreciate the mileage the Expy got! I'm hoping to talk her into a 03-04 Expy, but have to wait on the insurance to see if we can afford one.
