I HAVE A 97 RANGER 2.3L, THE HAYNES MANUAL SAYS I CANNOT CHECK THE CODES UNLESS I HAVE A SCAN TOOL. IS THERE ANYWAY AROUND THAT? ALSO WHAT IS THE EASIEST WAY TO CHECK THE O2 SENSORS? MY TRUCK HAS 105K ON IT. IT HAS NO POWER STARTING OUT, BUT ONCE IT GETS GOING ITS FINE.
auto zone wont help you if the check engine light isnt on. they told me you cant check codes if its not on, i just laughed at them. i guess ill have to go to ford, god help me. they get 60 bucks an hour. Or i can just replace them and hope it helps.
i disconnected the ground off the battery, waited about 10 minutes then hooked it back up. my check engine light came on, so i took it to auto zone. i had 3 codes, 135-bank 1, 141-bank 1, and 171-too lean. now i just have to figure out where to go from here. any suggestions?
Because your Ranger is OBD-II compliant, your codes are probably as follows:
P0135 and P0141 (Heated Oxygen Sensor Circuit Malfunctions)
P0171 (Lean System Condition)
You can find a list of diagnostic trouble codes and their possible causes here.
Sounds as if your Bank 1 Upstream and Downstream Heated 02 Sensors are trying to tell you something ....probably directly related to the Lean System condition.
