I was wondering how I can tell if my 2002 XLT 4X4 has a limited slip axle without jacking it up and turning the wheels. Is there a code on the back of the differential I can read to find out. Thanks in advance.
There is a tag on the rear differential that is attatched to a bolt on the rear cover. It should have, (for ex: 3L73 8.8) The top number starting at the bolt will be the gear ratio. If it has and L between the first numer and the second it is a locking rear. Good luck!
Yours says "97"? That means you do not have a limited slip. If it is limited slip, the code will be a number and letter combination. For instance, I think mine is "R7" or something like that.

so I just did a check of my axle, R6, and it says limited slip 3.73, but it doesn't act like a limited slip, could it be mine is just bad. In 2H I can easily break just one tire loose on dry pavement.
I would believe that, can tell the previous owner of my truck used it pretty good, lots of charachter to it, and some welds on the exhaust where it looks like it must have been busted at some point. Still runs like a champ, though. Is it very expensive to get the clutch packs replaced or would I be best getting a whole new traction system.
