Parking light actuation

I have a 2006 F350 CCLB FX4. Is there a way to allow the running/parking lights to come on when I open the door like my dad's 2012?

I don't have any roof/clearance lights yet, I'm a little on the fence about drilling holes in my roof but it seems the truck should have them, especially being an F350. Thanks.

That feature isn't in the 2006 model.

You could add a relay to make that happen.

Well, the dome light and the bed light both come on when opening the door. I just wondered if there was a way to tap into that circuit to make them all come on.

Where would I add the relay? Thanks.

You would use the bed light or the dome light circuit as the trigger and put power to the parking light circuit. I don't know wiring colors off the top of my head.

Nice, it sounds like tracing down wiring diagrams and such. Would I still need to add a relay to trigger the parking light circuit or just a simple tapping in?

Yes, you can "tap" into one of those circuits to also activate the parking lamps. Using a relay and a diode will prevent back-feeding the source circuit when the auxiliary circuit is powered up under its normal circumstances. For example, you want the parking lamps to come on with the cabin lights, but you clearly don't want the cabin lights to come on whenever the parking or head lights are turned on which is what would happen if you simply spliced into the source circuit.

What year is your truck?

Use the relay to trigger the parking lights. It is the easiest way without horsing around.

It's a 2006 F350. Great, sounds like using a relay is the way to go. BUT, I have no idea WHERE to use it. I'm really ignorant when it comes to wiring. Suggestions?

I'll look in my wiring diagram book after work and get you the colors.

For Ford the parking light wire is normally brown and its a positive wire.

I looked it up for you and that is the case.

You will only need a simple 4 pin relay you can get them at radio shack or auto stores AND DONT FORGET YOUR CRIMPS.

To wire your relay (I did this on my truck before though it's an expedition) hook it up like this

Pin 30 you can just tap it into the trucks main constant 12v headlight power supply that way you don't have to add fuses.

Pin 87 is your brown parking light wire that you tap into behind the headlight switch. Just install the relay under the drivers dash it'll make things easier if you have to adjust something or disable the feature for some reason

Pin 86 is just a ground pin.

And then, your final pin #85 comes from a positive dome light wire.

The thing to remember when adding this feature is that unlike the new trucks where the lights will go off after a minute of being on, these trucks will not and will stay on as long as your interior lights are on.

Do I cut the wire or just use one of those clip on attachments? Then run that wire into the relay? What color is the main headlight 12V wire? What color is the positive dome light wire? Where can I find those wiring schematics so I don't have to keep bugging people? Thanks.

You'll need the quick connects to connect to the relay and then if I were you I'd try the splicing method where you only scrape off a little insulation and then... Just look it up.

And then to find the other 2 wires you will need a something like a test light to let you know there's positive current. The headlamp positive wire connects right into the back of the headlamp switch so you'll need to get a butter knife and carefully pry your headlamp switch out. The headlamp feed is always live 12v positive. There are two of them but you can tap into either.

As for the dome light wire you should just connect it to the positive lead on one of the interior lights. If you're lucky you'll have a light down under the dash that makes its easy to keep all your wires close under the dash. If not you can tap into one up at the roof of your cab and run the wire under the headliner down to the drivers dash. Run the wire to the door and then carefully pull the door seal off and run wire under that to the dash.

Hope this helps
