Engine knock on 351 Windsor
Hey FTE, Blackhawk here again.
My '84 isn't sitting so pretty anymore.
While warming the thing up, i decided to make it get loud (previous owner straight piped it) and went to 4000rpm.
No biggie, right?
Then, I revved it up to 4500 or 4750 and then it started making the worst noise an old truck owner wants to hear: knocking.
I'm strapped for cash, and I don't wanna loose my baby.
Does anyone know about this high-rev issue on old Windsors?

If you over revved your ol Ford there really isnt much to do about it.The damage is done. By all means change oil and filter, pray to the good Lord to let her get you around for a while (and it is a Ford so she will) and dont do anything STOOPID.The old saying " If you gonna be dumb you gotta be tough" Applies.

4700 is not over-revving by any stretch of the imagination. You should be able to get 5500 on these motors without risking any damage.
It's possible that you starved the engine of oil and the knocking sound you heard was the lifters rattling around. If the oil pickup screen is clogged it's entirely possible that it may not have done any damage at all. The only way you are going to be able to check for damage is to strip the motor down so you may as well drive it until it dies. If you damaged it, you won't be able to undo it, and you didn't, it's fine. So I would just file this one under "don't do it again" and cross your fingers.
2nd post in years... glad to be back to FTE!

I agree with the guy above, I've gotten brave and revved my 351w HO to at least 6500-7500. It was kinda sketchy to have the RPM up that high but the engine still had room to climb. At these RPMS, the engine didn't hiccup, cough, or anything. I agree with what was posted above, oil change and different filter. If you have a NAPA store around you, use a 21515 oil filter and I would definitely recommend running 10w30, synthetic or plain is up to you. If the problem persists, I think it may be time to start looking for a rebuild kit. The reason I say this, an engine knocking usually indicates that the valve train isn't up to par. This can range anywhere from heads, to lifters. If you go the route of engine rebuild, I suggest looking on RockAuto, you can buy a kit that includes a cam, all bearings, piston rings, pistons, oil pump, timing chain and gear, gaskets, etc. The kit does NOT come with heads, you will need to decide if your head is up to par or not, I will leave a link for you to the heads that I am currently looking at for my own engine at the bottom. ALSO if you decide to buy the kit without the cam and decide to buy a cam separately, be sure to pay attention and buy the one with lifters!
