Hello everyone, I am in the market for a transmission cooler. I have been shopping around and found a couple good runners but thought I would post what I think would be good and get some insight from some others. I was thinking about either running this one http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...1&pgGrp=catNav
Or

This one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't do any towing just driving/ weekend racing. And the trans is a c4 powered by a 302
I may be wrong , but I think he hit post too many times . It happens to me .
I did stupid internet connection sucked and didn't know if I posted or not cause it kept saying failed attempt, or something along those lines so my apologies, if anyone knows how to delete them I will do so.
The second is a plate type, which has more surface area. It would be more efficient. However is twice the price, but not twice as efficient. First one will work fine.
plate and fin over tube and fin. the second one looks like a heluva cooler. probably overkill, but hey, why not.
It is made for a 7.3 so it may be a little over kill, but hopefully someone who knows a good amount about Tranys will chime in. But thanks for the help
i think one might have a hard time overcooling a c4 in a truck, but i could be wrong.
FWIW, the factory towing package on my 2000 explorer kept the transmission temperature below 100°F in the winter and below 160°F in the summer. Many say that is too low, and perhaps they are right, but it did not hurt the service life of the transmission (had 175k on it when i sent it down the road).
there are many on this forum that know a great deal more about transmissions than I do, and even some of them say that overcooling a transmission can cause problems -- they are probably right -- but i'm not one that spends much time worrying about it. If it were really that much of a concern, then the big 3 would have addressed it much sooner than they did.
There is a U-Tube video present by Ram where the program manager for the new 3.5L V6 penastar engine and the the new 8 speed auto trans states that 193F is optium efficiency temperature for the transmission fluid. The new design incorporates a heat exchanger using exhaust gas to bing the the auto trans temperature up to 193F, even in freezing cold ambient temperatures, quickly.
Noticed on a chevolet suburban there is a plate type auto trans oil cooler that is the only heat exchanger used to cool the oil. Meausure ~ 8" X 8". The plate type exchanger is not connected in series with the radiator.
The Ford explorer and expediation with towing package uses a conventional fin type oil cooler in series with the regular cross flow radiator.
Picked up a plate type oil cooler at help yourself salvage yard last weekend for $10 from a chevy surburban. Got the one with 3/8" FNPT connections rather than the swivel O ring style.
