Stolen car ?

I hope this the right place to post this.
Normally I use the bronco board.

My brothers car was stolen in Omaha NE,It is an Olds Delta 88.

The police happened to have stopped the car at 1:00 AM and arrested the people in it.
They drove to Atlantic IA with 9 people in the car, the oldest being 17 & the youngest was 4.

I am curious about was what should we have checked and what all should we do to the car, just to make sure it will be somewhat alright?

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Brad

If there is no damage which you "can see", I would check the oil, radiator, tires, etc. just to make sure it hasn't been "run hard and put up wet". It may be that they just needed to get from Omaha to Atlantic, not that stealing the car is "OK", but just maybe they didn't screw it up. Good Luck!

they didnt have to get from omaha to atlantic all the kids are from omaha. The car is still in atlantic with 3 flat tires from the stop sticks they were pursued for about 24 minutes and covered about 31 miles on a 2 lane highway through towns and a t intersection we calculated it out they still averaged 75 mph the cop began pusuit because he clocked them in excess of 95 he told us and they reach over 100 sometimes one girl in the car was 16 and had her 8 and 4 year old sister in the car with her at 1 in the morning on a wednesday night. great parenting by those great parents if you ask me. yeah it is still in atlantic because the steering column is all messed up cant start it or even put it into neutral thanks for the suggestions I will definetly check out those things

That's a dirty shame, Brad. Hope it works out okay. Just curious, do the cops pay for the damage they do, or just give the car back and say "didn't we do good, we recovered your car"? I've seen lots of car chases on "Cops" where they just about destroy the car they're chasing.

Oh yeah, you are going to have to check it over real good. New tires and steering column, as minimum. Your insurance should get it back to running condition (with any luck). Car thieft really sucks!

I'd pull the seats out (if the police didn't) to make sure nothing is stashed inside of it anywhere.

Congrats on getting your car back, I think I would ask the police to call in the dogs to do a sniff test for wacky weed or other stuff.

Stolen car ?

well he didnt have full coverage no point really he bought it from an older lady for 1200 has 84k miles on it only police dont pay for it but they told us to keep all recipts for it plus gas to get there and back is about 60 miles 120 round trip and we have been out there once and once more to get the car because the thief will have to go to court and he will have to pay for it if he doesnt he will get a bigger sentence but since they are minors we can go to small claims court and collect from their parents and we shouldnt need a lawyer since he confessed to it and all.

yeah the police searched it all before it was towed to the repair shop. The police found a prybar, flashlight, wire cutters, leatherman knife, and 2 screwdrivers. that is what was written on the police report.

I'd donate it to a charity and get a good tax right off...

I'd consult a lawyer even though they confessed, if for no other reason to help you understand the process. The kid's will have lawyers, the state has lawyers... just makes sense that you should have one to protect your interests.

And I agree with retired2001... car theft really sucks!

OK, that sucks. But, as far as the condition of the car...
What year was it? If it was an 80-85 then I'm assuming it's a 307 with either a TH200 or TH350. In either case, these cars were geared for long, high speed trips. Extended travel at 75 is nothing, and 100MPH is no big deal either.

If it's an older one, say 70's, then the only thing they did was drain the gas tank.

If it's a newer one (V-6), well, I don't have any experience with em, but I'm sure it'll be OK.

In reality, I'd be more concerned with things like brakes, tires(which are already gone), shocks & springs (who knows what they hit), body damage, and what they did to the interior (hide things, hump, spill, ect) than I would be about running one of these tanks wide open for a while..
