Have a 56 F100 with stock front end and have a broken lug bolt on left front. What is the easiest way to remove the broken bolt and install a new one? Thank You
4 Lug Bolts just won't do.
Here's an illustration of your front end. The lug bolts (1107) are pressed into the hub. If you broke one off, the easiest way is to just drive or press the old one out through the back of the hub and drive or press a new one in. The lugs have a short knurled section under the head that will fit tightly in your hub and hold the bolt in place even without the lug nut on.
Only thing is, I have an F-250 and I can't remember if you can get the bolts out the back on an F-100 without taking off the hub. You can tell just by looking if there is enough clearance or maybe we can get a little help from an F-100 owner.
If you broke a front stud, then take a drift punch and drive what's left out towards the backing plate. Then take a new one and angle it into place. Take a few oversize washers and slip then over the stud, put a extra lug nut on backwards with the flat side towards the hub and SLOWLY tighten it up. THis will pull the stud thru the hub. Beats taking the hub off. Works every time for me!
Bob, DO NOT pound the broken lug out of the hub with a punch!!! You must back up the hub (use a piece of pipe just bigger than the bolt) or you will warp the hub. Easiest if you remove the hub first.
