I'm in the market for a diesel and I came across a 03 f250 lariat edt. 6.0 has around 170k. What should I look for when I go check it out? I hear nothing but bad news about these things lol but for the price I can't go wrong he wants like 11k not a bad looking truck. I just don't want to spend a ton of money on something that will be sitting in the shop the rest Of it's life. Let me know thanks in advance
I bought a 05 F350 for 4500 190 000 km on it. First diesel didn't know much about diesels but so far, replaced the coolant reservoir, rewired the reverse lights, rear brakes, the biggest thing that has me worried is the engine and transmission. The engine was missing 1 gallon of oil, transmission was missing 1 gallon of oil and the coolant was missing 1 gallon of coolant. So far it starts good a little rough the first minute then settles down (but the weather is cold up here). It does need all the basic services, new tires, and all new filters. The transmission hits hard on reverse .....I think it might be messed up.
POINT is: Initially you will end up spending a pretty penny on a used vehicle I suggest the basics, take it in for a good inspection, service everything that needs to be serviced, keep an eye on it for the first 3 months. Routinely check all fluid levels for signs of problems. (drop the pan when servicing the engine). Catch the problems before they escalate.....save you money.

You could be experiencing injector stiction. Check out Rev-X, Archoil 9100, or Hot Shot Secret. The latter (HSS) has been working wonders for my 6.0.
Get an Oasis report , ask about the work that has been done,... Find out if the truck has headstuds, EGR Delete, the service info. is a must ... Check the oil , look at the coolant (green is bad !!!) gold is normal, red is great , most of all Find a shop or a maybe there is a member on here near you, that can go with you..... Look at every last thing, tire, front end, ball joints, u joints, look at the oil filter and the fuel filters, do a bubble test... make a list and check it twice.... Crawl all over and under the truck, look for oil leaks, I only say all of this because you will see all kinds of horror stories and you will see more bad than good...
But here is us .... 786K , ARP Headstuds at 100K, faithful 5000 mile oil changes, 10000 fuel filters, dropped 10 lifters at 550K so a whole engine rebuild. We did not buy one from AE or PMM. We rebuilt it with Ford parts. Only Ford injectors, oil cooler, Cat coolant, egr delete, 6 speed manual.
We see trucks day in and day out 7 days a week 18 hours a day, we love our 2006 6.0 and they are great trucks... If the money has not been spent to love this truck, then look at 5 or 7 grand to make it a great truck!!! If the truck is bone stock, talk your way down to 9 grand because you will need the extra $$$
6.0 with 220k. How long does the 6.0 tend to last for before everything starts ****tin the bed
It always, always, always, comes down to how well it was taken care of. If the truck was like mine and the PO didn't do much past oil changes and fuel filter changes unless something broke, then it will fall apart.
Fortunately for me and my truck, I wasn't about to let that happen. In my case, I promptly went through it with a fine tooth comb and over the last 7 months I've changed every fluid for peace of mind since from the looks of things, the PO never bothered. Between the Bulletproofing, Flushing of fluids, regular maintenance, and replacing an alternator, fuel pump, and vss I've only spent $5,746.97 (most of which was PSE bulletproofing the engine) over the last 8 months.
As long as it's well cared for, you 6.0 will last forever.
Years ago we used to say that nobody sold a truck unless it was at the end of its life or needed some major work. Perhaps that isn't as true today but I drive a 2003 coming up on 100K and this truck does not leave me until I am so disgusted about the amount of money I have put into it or I am concerned about the amount of money I will have to put into it. I have not reached either point yet.
I do obsess over maintenance and run gauges .The truck looks like it is a couple of years old when it is shined up and the interior is in great condition. It will probably still look good when I decide to sell it.
That said, once you get by the aesthetics, have someone run a scan on it and check the suspension components. If you do buy it, install a fuel pressure gauge and Scan Gauge II so you can monitor the vitals.
I estimate I will have to put somewhere between $8,000-$12,000 in my truck between 100K and 200K miles. I have planned for this since the new replacement truck at the Ford house has a sticker of around $55,000. To get through the next 100k miles for $8,000 - $12,000 seems like good value to me.
Good luck with your truck!
