Timing wrong stroke?

Hello every one new to site very helpfullg. stuck in a jam, I have a 06 ford expedition 5.4 3v I am in the process of replacing the timing chain, every thing had moved during removal so I put engine back at TDC. line up my marks. I wanted to check timing was right. so I went through rotating the crank again, put it back in TDC "MAN THAT WAS EXHAUSTING" and the marks were off? Am I at the wrong stroke? or does that not matter on these engine. Please forgive my ignorance am not to familiar with these 5.4 3 v. am kinda old school in my mechanic skills. I been a Ford man all my life but I know I missing a step here, any help well be much appreciated

How many revolutions did you turn the crank?

You're screwed now. The 5.4 is an interference engine, which means that as you rotated the crank you jammed pistons up into opened valves and likely bent the stems. Any repair manual worth it's salt would've had this warning in it to not rotate the crank with the timing chains off.

Due to the length of the chains it takes something like 38 revolutions before all the marks will line up again.

I don't know the actual number but I do believe it would have to be divisible by 4, being a 4 stroke engine and all.

When I did my Timing, Phasers, pump and all for the first time last month the first thing I did when I got everything exposed is mark the locations of both cams with a marker and then note the cranks location. This made it very easy to time it back when putting it together.

The only thing about doing this is when lining it up and putting the chains on you want to make sure there is no slack in the chain especially on the side that is going to be pulled on when you start the motor.

I recommend this method because I never had to turn the motor over even once and now she runs like a pro. Did this at 180k. Just rolled 187k and she still hits 5k on the tach no problem. Damn I love them 5.4s
