SCT tuner question

SCT tuner question
I am looking into getting one of the SCT 3015 tuners to help wake up my 01 6.8L 2 wheel Excursion. I have already done some upgrades. (y-pipe, flow master, cold air). My question is does it need to be coded / programmed to my computer? I have seen some on amazon, ebay and other sites but did not know if I could just buy one as "plug and play" or if it has to be set up to my specific vehicle? I think the base model 3015 comes with 3 pre loaded tunes, is this good enough?
Any other ideas and or info on this is greatly appreciated.

When you purchase one, I got mine from 5star, you will need the code off the PCM. then it will only work on a truck with the same PCM code. not sure, but after it is installed I think it can only be used on your truck due to the VIN.
They are an excellent tuner and offer good HP and TQ. and it will let you adjust some parameters.

Buy the 3015 and try it with the canned tunes 1st. See how it acts for you and go from there. You do not need your vin# to purchase the tuner. Make sure to update the firmware from SCT website before you plug it into your truck.it before you
Custom tunes will need your vin #, and current factory tune strategies.
You can use the tuner on any for vehicle, but you have to unmarry it from the original vehicle you used it on first. The down side is that you only have 5 times to do that before you have to send it back in and get it reset. That usually costs $150.00 to get it reset.
The best money I have spent on my truck was the tuner and custom tunes!

Anyone know when the next 5 star sale is ?
I bought a used one and could not update it with their updater from sct's website. I gave them a call after which they remotely updated mine (gave them remote access to my computer). Apparently the firmware on mine was too old to be updated with their latest software.
After that updates worked like a charm.
