HELP!!! 6.0L vs 6.4L

Hey guys I'm about to buy a new truck and I need your opinions as soon as possible! I won't be doing any heavy towing (mainly just construction materials and general commuting) and I'm not worried at all about fuel economy. I just want to know which truck you think is a better deal and which one you would think would be the most reliable/last the longest. Also any common pros and cons with each year and model, especially the 6.0L vs the 6.4L.

I'm torn between a 2005 6.0L F250 Super Duty and a 2008 6.4L F250 Super Duty. Both trucks are obviously 4x4, automatic transmission, have towed, and both bodies are in excellent condition. Both are priced at $15,000.

2005 Ford F250 Super Duty XLT SuperCab Long Bed has 108,830 miles on it. 6.0L Turbo Diesel. It was used on a diary farm to haul cattle. 4 wheel drive and automatic transmission.

2008 Ford F250 Super Duty XLT SuperCrew Short Bed has 190,138 miles on it. 6.4L Turbo Diesel. It was a Texas truck. 4 wheel drive and automatic transmission.

I love both trucks but I'm leaning towards the 2008. Theres an obvious trade between one being newer and the other having less miles. Do you think 190k miles is too much to buy as a long term reliable truck? Thanks in advance for the advice guys I'm not a truck expert so anything you have will be helpful!

My vote is to keep shopping. If anything the 05 but I wouldn't pay 15k for a truck that old even if it had a jet engine.

My dad just bought a King Ranch from the same guy selling the '08 6.4L so i may be able to talk him down as far as 12k, do you think that is still too much?

Also the 190k miles scares me a bit but after all I've read about the '08s do you think it may be a blessing in disguise considering all the issues and recalls may have been "worked" through?

With all the potential problems between the two engines I think it would be cheaper to fox the 6.0. That truck has less miles and a engine that you could more readily work on with the cab on it. My truck has 101k currently and it a 06. I wouldnt be scared to pull anything with it. Its a great truck does everything I ask of it. I would pass on the 08 based on millage first off. At 200k things start needing to be replaced. With that 6.4 everything is expensive. The 6.0 isnt cheap just not as expensive. At 100k id guess you still have 60-70k before stuff starts to give you problems given it had sone sort of maintenance in the past

6.0 has less emissions and will stand the short drives and in town commuting better.

6.4 is good strong towing and hwy motor but needs more maintaince. Have to look over the records carefully and see if it was tuned or not.

Just did a carfax on them and it turns out the 2008 was used as a fleet/leased truck for a 3 years and put on about of 3,000 miles per year which is 3x the normal average.

This is probably a huge red flag right? I've read that fleet vehicles are notorious for cutting corners on routine maintenance like oil changes, not to mention 3,000 miles a month is a lot of hard miles

Could have been owned by a business. Depending on the year our techs put on 20-25k per year around the twin cities. Highway in Texas could easily be higher than that.

It's not necessarily a huge flag. Some companies take very good care of their vehicles and have a routine schedule that is strictly adhered to. Others let the drivers take care of it which usually where you run into issues.

But you do need to take into account no companies pitch a perfectly good vehicle for no reason. So it either "mileaged" out or it was starting to become unreliable.

I would take the 6.0. As said above, they are less expensive to work on and all of the issues are well known. ALso, having fewer emissions is always a good thing.

The mileage is irrelevant (even 190k is nothing for a Power Stroke, or any diesel really).

It's all about how well maintained each truck has been. For the same price, I'd buy a truck with twice the miles if there was proof it had been well maintained.

If you're really prepared to drop $15k on either truck, get an Oasis report on each (take the VINs down to the Ford dealer and ask for the report). That'll give you a better picture of each truck's history, assuming they've been worked on at a dealer.

Is there a reason you need either of the most problematic motors ford ever put in their vehicles. For what you described above and for the money you want to spend you could get a very nice newer v8 or v10 truck that will last you a good long time and not have issues

I am saying this as a fan of the 6.4, although I wouldn't take a 6.0 with a million mile warranty if you gave it to me for free. I just think your money could be better spent

Absolutely, just letting him know there may be better options when it comes to spending that kind of money

I'm in the same boat as original poster. But I thought the 6.4 was a better engine so that's the direction I was leaning.
