My son changed ATF and filter in his truck by dropping pan. Did not attempt to drain converter or anything exotic. Replaced fluid, accidentally overfilled by about 2-3 qts. Truck exhibited erratic shifts on short test drive. He discovered overfilled problem, drained and verified proper level. Now, truck will not shift out of 1st.
Short of replacing with a STANDARD , any ideas for starters? I know, read codes, etc, which we will do. Basic question is how damaging is the overfill for a 1/2 mile drive????????
Thanks.
When was the last time the fluid was changed. There is another thread here that addresses changing of fluid. Several people said that if you have lots of miles (80,000+) and never changed the fluid, debris can cling to the sides of the tranny. When you change fluid, the fresh detergent breaks these pieces loose and they go through the transmission and destroy it. I have no idea if that's your problem, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Thanks, Bubba, I saw that this morning, and tend to agree. I had told him probably leave it alone, but you know kids and their new truck...:-)
I'm still fighting it, and have another thread that brought responses some quite helpful. Fixing to update there where it now sits. Cured the first problem (stuck 2-3shift and D-2 spools) and , it now shifts into 2nd with something there to pull the truck fine. But now still won't shift out of 2nd. Valve bodies are clean now, and fixed the low Drive line pressure, and there are no codes being thrown.
In the bodies, I found a lot of sludge and a few tiny shreds of silicone from the pan gasket some idiot in Guam used before my son bought the truck.
Last step before dropping the tranny, I think, am rigging some current probes to the E4OD harness to scope and guarantee that the soleniods are all firing normally. I've gone back through all the sensor tests a "umpteenth" time, and find nothing erratic or wrong...
I sure wish I knew what you were talking about and could fix my own transmission like your are fixing yours. Dropped mine off at Mr. Transmission. He's pulled the tranny, an AOD that's not shifting right, and he's supposed to tell me the bad news in the morning. Good luck to you.
