I haven't posted here in awhile, as I haven't had much time to do any work on the truck in a long time. (had a kid two years ago, and moved into a money pit of a house at the same time).
It's a 66 F100 with a 240 and a C4 auto (converted to a B&M floor shifter). I fixed it up to a point - it will never be a show truck by any means, but it's fun to bum around in. I keep it at my cabin and cruise around the area, haul some wood and stuff to the dump. Light duty stuff mostly, though I have pulled a tree or two down with it. I retired it from boat launching duty when I got stuck in a muddy launch two years ago.
Anyway, the transmission has been going bad for a while. I'm sure it's original and has never been rebuilt. I had a seal replaced a couple years ago when it dumped all the fluid on the street in the middle of town, but it's to the point now where I'm going to have to address it correctly. The "garage" at the cabin where I keep it is a dirt floor with no electricity, so doing the work myself up there isn't an option, and I don't really feel like towing it 300 miles home. (and even then, I don't have the garage space in the new house I did in the old one where I did all the original work).
I'm assuming I'm going to end up getting a rebuilt one put in, rather than having this one rebuilt. Any ideas on what I'm looking at for a cost?
C4's do not cost very much to have rebuilt back to a stock configuration, the transmission should cost in the range of 500-750 plus an extra 100 or so for a reman converter if you need one. this is if you plan to remove and replace the trans yourself.
I would plan on 1500 if a shop does everything for you. i recently had a C6 done and with a reman converter it was 525 out the door.
As an alternative a new one from someone like Jegs is about $950 with new plates, seals etc. add the converter for about $200. If you overheated it anytime in its life seals may not be all you need. I only add this because I could not find one at $750- my estimates were more like $2000. The guy that helped me change it said rebuilts at low prices are very regional, he came from Ohio where they were $600, here in FL they were $2000. I added a Large HD cooler for $100.
I'm not as expert as the majority here, but just adding in my perspective for your decisions
Thanks - estimates I've got so far are around $1200 - 1700, which seems a bit higher than I'd thought. I'm going to check a couple more places. I'd love to do it myself, but I don't think that's going to happen at this point.
EDIT: Oops just reread your post and saw the diy not happening comment so you can ignore below
If you are handy and have some time, buy a rebuild kit for under 2 hundred and try to rebuild it yourself. Replacing clutches, bands, seal and new fluid usually gets you going. My dad had a side business doing this in the 70s and would even warranty the work.
Note this would not be considered a complete rebuild, but it's cheap and effective.
Good luck

IMO, an amateur should not attempt an overhaul of this trans.
